SAMPLING LIVE INSTRUMENTS

I'M FAIRLY NEW TO SAMPLING. I OWN THE MPC2000XL. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SAMPLE LIVE INSTRUMENTS. HOW CAN YOU SAMPLE AT THE TEMPO OF YOUR SONG IF YOU CAN'T SAMPLE TO A METRONOME. PLEASE REPLY!

I would suggest recording the instruments to tape first (cassette, DAT, harddrive, whatever)........and then sample from the tape to the MPC.
