Cuts

I reckon Madlib is the best at this. When the track is playing and the music cuts out for like 1/4 of a bar with the rapper is still rhyming. Whats the best way of doing this on an MPC?? Can you assign a pad to mute and then un-mute the sequence? or is there another way of doing this??

Unfortunatley not, you can assign a pad to cut another pad off tho.
So delete everything you can from the last quater bar and anything that plays out you'll have to create a pad (of silence) to cut them off.

Presumably you'll be recording the beat to some sort of hard disk so you can record the vox on top, so you're probably better to cut it then.

If you use the 'Track Mute' function (there's a button for it), then the pads will become mute switches for each track of your sequence.

You can turn each track on and off in real time with the pads.

Or you could pull the level down on your fader...

as mentioned by itchyvinyl use the 'track mute' but create an empty track first. in the track mute window press solo then the pad that corresponds to the empty track

i go into sequence edit and drop out any unwanted sounds in a specific spot.

I add my mutes on my AW16G. So I usually track the whole beat in, then I feel what parts should be muted out.

You can record track mutes on your MPC 4k easily though the data is stored differently than sequence data. There's some info on how to do this in the users guide....

Well I haven't tried this but it sounds like for what you want to do.... You could copy all the tracks onto one track and just mute that on and off like madlib does it. He probably just records the whole song (vocals and everything) onto the sp303. Then you can do as you wish manipulating your song as if it were a sample.

i personally do the mute in my mixer (roland vs890), after my vocals are recording. I just mute the 2 tracks the beat is on.

then record air static from a record for that 1/4 on an empty track

if I know that im trying to make a track with cuts like that I usually sequence in protools and just do the drums on the MPC. I use live as a rewire to quantize the snares so they hit exact so I can chop perfect on protools. otherwise depending on how long the sample, it isnt quantized perfect so if you use amplitude or whatever type of chop thats on the mpc the samples will be different lengths. this can be cleaned up by triming but it seems easier to use a good software program to get it done quickly if you want it perfect.
