nice test there ... and lol at foolin everyone ...

anyways i m late and wouldnt have gotten it either (the only thing i would have guessed is that beat 2 is the 3k, no clou on the other 2)... but anyways i liked beat 3 and 1 almost the same and both better than beat 2 - if i were to choose i d say i liked the 3rd beat best (60), than the 1st (sp) than the 2nd (3k) ... but i got some questions on the process:
1. on whichone did u sample the original break of (on all 3?) ?
2. on whichone did u first make the beat (... and thus base the settings for the external stuff - comp., eq) ?
3. what about the reverb on the snare - was it already in the original sample?
4. and what sampler/software did u use to finally record the 3 beats?

im glad i picked out the 60. i thought all the 60 heads would have it razor sharp.

1/ all 3 (that's the point of the test)
2/ on the SP - but the settings were from a previous beat
3/ Reverb is from my Lexicon processor
4/ recorded on Roland VS1880

I was actually surprised at how similar the 3 sounded. I expected more differences b/w the SP and the 3K. One thing I realized in the process, though, was that 16bit is actually dirtier than 12 bit. I sampled from a breakbeat record with poor mastering, and the 3k picked up all of the unmusical nasty noises. With the 60 and the SP, the 12bit lo-fi attenuated those noises.

Anyway, the moral of the story is that I really don't need all of these samplers!

:D :D :D :)

damn, i dont have a 60 or a 3000 or an SP and got it right :)
it was hard, i liked the SP and the 60 the most.

HAH! I know my 60 boyeee!

I thought the SP was 2 not because of the swing, which I can't differentiate but because of that little crunch, if the 3K does that I might have to haaave it!

1. thought so - only askin ...
2. ok
3. niceone, wanted to know whether an eventual reverb in the original sample was catched that differently by the different samplers or sounded different coz of bein applied on different source samples. the rev on the snare makes the main difference imo on those 3 beaz ...
4. ok.

well i dont have any of them and dunno how they really sound ... but yo - seems the pros dunno either  ... nah - just kiddin ... i only thought that beat 2 has more highs or presence or whateva they call it and i thought its coz of the higher sample rate the 3k has over the other 2 ... and prolly that makes the lex come out more?! ... (imo on the 3k example there s too much of it - and i think that could be coz u did the settings for the lexicon based on the sp sound first) ... well dunno - maybe its just my system that makes the 3k sound less good then the other 2 ... nice test ...

that hat was tough to swallow (purple fedora)

looks like i need to add a 3000 to the shopping list lol, it was my favourite of the 3

what else you got max? would be very interesting to hear a 950 (seq off the 60), eps16+, asr10 and some new school joint like a 1k or sp303 alongside the ones you have already put up. great post.

yeah yeah i got em all wrong.

man, now that was hard. i'll tell you a few things that made it even harder to really tell for me. beat #2 was the loudest, that made the snare sound crunchier and pop a bit more. it also had the most reverb compared to the other beats, or maybe it was just louder so the reverb came out more.
but that made it harder to tell, trying to get the samples recorded into each sampler at the same level is very difficult, and that can vary the sound a lot, but also how you record the beat matters as well, how loud it is getting recorded into your computer and such can make things sound very different. Even if you normalize if it;s recorded lower it can alter things.

I've been a part of many of these types of tests (usually with regard to Analog vs. VA synths) and I'll tell you that how the things are recorded can throw a lot of things off.

the thing that got me was the highs, the way the files were #3 sounded like it handled the highs the cleanest, I wouldn't have thought the 60 would win on that front, but again input level sampling matters a lot as well, especially with hihats, just a little too loud and they're distorted, that's what example #1 had that made me think it was the 60, and example 2 had almost the worst of it so I thought it had to be the SP.

interesting test, one thing i learned is my 60 sounds like an Sp-1200 and max's sounds like a 3000

I think most blind tests of musical instruments are tricky. It's funny that you mention the reverb on the 3000 was longer - it was actually at exactly the same rate and presence, but I noticed too when I recorded that it seemed longer on the 3000 than on the others.

To my ears the 60 sounds quite close to the SP1200, and I don't think I would have guessed correctlty either. In fact, I was convinced that Premo was using an SP1200 :D.

As for other samplers, I may throw my EPS in the mix, but the interest would be quite limited since it's another 12 bit sampler.

The outputs on the 3000 are louder than those of the 60, not sure what the output level of the 1200 I'm not sure of. that would account for the reverb since it was getting hit harder.

Some people did get it right, so there must be something to it. the reverb might mask them, compression as well takes the smack test out, the similar processing makes them sound more alike I think.

nice! but drop another one with a drumbreak thats not compressed and eq'ed. raw straight up. peace

Interesting idea to do this kind of poll, nice. I personally think that the sp really reveals itself when you start to tune the samples.

I liked the lows of the 60 and the highs of the SP, combining the two would be ideal.

Max, nice test yo!!! I'm really feelin' the 3000 now... even more than I was b4. I didn't vote b/c I got 2 the party late but in retrospect I would have voted 3. 3000 2. 1200 1. 60. The ouput seemed lower on beat 1 more so than the other 2 or am I trippin(?). Beat 2 seemed hella crunchy I think that's y I thought that was a 1200 having never fooled with 1. I think a good control 4 the test would have been 2 have the orignal sample come from a sampler not involved in the test (since Max got it like that). All in all a really fun exercise. BTW good music on your soundclicc page. Nuff respect! -uno-
