Is there any way that you can filter the drums out so all you get is the other instruments???

As far as filtering out all of the percussion it is impossible, but if you just want to remove the lower drums like the kicks and bassdrums you can set your EQ so that they are hardly audible. You can also do the same with higher end percussive instruments, this will definitely affect your melodies though. I only use this technique if I sample a kick or snare that has a high hat layered over it or vice versa.

That does seem to be true.
Filtering out 100% of any drums is impossible IMO. There will always be some remnant of sound left in the background somewhere, even if the drums were recorded in mono and you filter out ALL mono or vice versa.
