max - u got access to a 4k for some 24 bit comparison? ... or a Z4/z8?

yeah matching levels and such is important for these kinds of tests, not that it would reveal the answers clearer, but alot of the character of these machines is in the attack of the sound of drums, and running them all through compression evens out the differences, as does the reverb in smoothing out the highs.

I want more! throw the EPS in, but no effects, and try to match the input levels to the samplers and the computer when recording the beat, particularly with the 3k which is louder. SLT can do one with the 60, sp and W-30, lets get all the 12 bits together!

yep. Let me find the break from Grease and I'll run those threw each machine uncompressed, no eq, no reverb ect....and we'll see what each has to reveal.

haha, nah man, I got 707 samples on my hard drive somewhere, I don;t really rock them, but it would be different than what we are used to hearing from our respective drum machines.

plus aren't the 707 sounds all 8 bit samples?

To really get the grunge out of the SP, you gotta sample at 45, and pitch them shtts down. The sound you get from doing that on the SP is a dead giveaway.

I'm glad you liked the test. I realize it wasn't 100% fair because of the eq and the levels which made them sound alike.

The next comparison: Loops straight to tape! and I'll throw the EPS in the mix.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to any other MPCs. A friend of mine has the 2k classic, but he's out of town.

Suggestions are welcome.

I hear you Boogie, but your conclusion doesn't follow from that test. the musician is the most important part, but the musician is affected by the machine(s) in front of him, that is the element that gets lost in a lot of the shoot out tests done with VA and analog. people would say "once it's in a mix you can't tell what was used to make it!!" Yes but the musician can tell, he has to use the machines, and when playing the instrument is when you really can judge it, not just listening to recordings of it in other people's hands. Listening to a recording of a stradivarious Violin next to a yamaha violin you might not be able to tell which is which, but the person playing them will tell you immediately. Its like playing a rhodes patch on a soft synth or workstation and sitting down at a real rhodes, very different experience and preferences go both ways, but you can't escape that the musician's experience counts, not just the listeners experience.
