TIMBALAND  (modules I HEARD from various sources he used)
Ensoniq asr 10
Korg trinity
emu mophatt
various roland keyboards  (???start out with the jv series???)

Neptunes (modules I HEARD from various sources they used)
Akai mpc 2000
Ensoniq asr 10
Korg triton  (Luda throw them bos, clipse grindin)
Roland jv 2080
propellerheads reason

A lot of this REALLY isn't neccesary to make good beats but you asked for it.

My opinion.

If you have an mpc ,I would shop for an all around synth with good presets for writing purposes (go out and listen), a sampler (do some research on this one), and if you are floating in cash a minimoog or some sort.

Also a decent turntable with a good vinyl collection helps, so does live instruments.

#1 reason is the best, cheap synth out there, ahem for free.
The neptunes use alot of vintage gear, thats how they get their sound, the asr-10 is their "original" and pahrell says no matter what they do it always comes back to the asr-10
timbo is a big fan of the worm (the wierd sounds he makes, that everyone copied for a while was made with the worm)

there's a post about this, and what gear the pro's use to make beats, it aint that differnet the what we can use, the advent of the cheap, super powerful pc is what means that anyone can make pro music.
i mean, the internal chip in an mpc is like a 386 or something, pre-pentium no doubt. think about it, your P3 500 has TONS more processing power then a pile of MPC 2000's, thats how we can even have reason, man if u told someone in 1990 that we'd have a pc program that emulated all that stuff, really well by 10 yrs. they'd have laughed in your face and gone back to playing blue max on their mac classic.

.

i don't think tim uses a trinity...i seen him rock a triton pro though....i agree with you about the rest though.....neptunes did use the triton for those songs cuz i picked out those same sounds.....throw them bows they use the ribbon for that lead sound...and for grinding the percussion kit does that........funny thing is that even before the grinding track i was messing with that drum kit and never thought to make a track out of it....lesson learned!
