Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By StuieC Wed Oct 12, 2005 5:44 pm
Im a Reason 2.5 owner and have been for some time, iv learned sequencing, drum laying, loop splitting etc and you have all the synths, reverbs you could want
the only thing iv been missing so far is being able to put my own samples from my own music collection into what i make and as u can imagine theres not much point eventually you've used all that reason give you built in, but it has helped me learn techniques

to solve my problem i was (and still may) going to buy :-
MPC
MPC hard drive
Synth
Cd deck and mixer
Mixer for everything
Speaker
total cost probs over £1500

Now i learn there is ReCycle for Reason where it can take any sample of music in .wav or .AIFF format, loop any segment and fit it to any bpm rate

and if i bought RealPlayer RadioPass i could upload my entire vinyle and cd collection in either format then could use with Reason
ReCycle is £100
RadioPass is around £100
Plus £100 for a M-Audio MIDI interface to hook my keyboard up to comp
a fraction of the cost of all equip id need for MPC conversion

Iv been looking on these boards for a week trying to learn about MPCs, how they work and how you hook them up to work (instead of just turning on my comp to hook everything up on Reason) and to me its F*$king complicated, full of jargon and letters and numbers, no for real answers and hooking the dam thing up, and use it how you want to sounds like you need a degree in music tech

BASICALLY SUM1 CONVINCE ME IM WRONG BECAUSE WRITING THIS POST HAS ALMOST MADE ME THINK F**K IT AND JUST GET THE STUFF FOR MY COMP

WHAT WILL I BE MISSING EXCEPT A HEADACHE AND A EMPTY WALLET?????

"a fraction of the cost of all equip id need for MPC conversion "

I think you may be leaving out a few things.

how much was the PC?
how about PC replacement cost?
PC hardware upgrades? Harddrives? Memory? Graphics card?
Audio interface? Some of these cost more than MPC's themselves.
how about time to maintain the PC? Is this something you can do yourself or will you have to send off your whole computer to scrape out the latest virus/spyware.

I really do not believe that running PC based is any cheaper. Anyone that is serious enough about buying dedicated hardware would buy dedicated PC hardware for studio, and that is not cheap.

^ yep

a decent sound card with 8 outs will cost you almost as much as a used empee.

Also MPC's can be brought along for gigging, whereas your laptop won't like the heat a 500W PAR lamp generates...

They're just two different things, completely different workflow, way of programming... Do whatever suits you best.

That hasnt realy convinced me
Im not taking the cost of the PC into account iv had it years and just added Reason to it
I aint that clumsy, why would i need a replacement?
By adding ReCycle would mean NO hardware upgrades DONT NEED NO NEW hard drives or memory,
I dont understand you mentioning graphics card i deal in sound
and if you look i took the audio interface into account, its £100 not £700 for the MPC
Maintaining my PC costs nothing a computer pro friend does what i cant.

If i hooked up a DAT machine to record (yes at a high cost) i dont see why my producing would be much less quality than a load of expensive racked equipment.

Just stick to reason, unless u have a reason not to.

No ones gonna convince u.

Im seriously asking for what would i be loosing in production by using a PC

Is it not the done thing to use PCs and that why they dont get used
Can the MPC give me something that PC programs cant in sound quality, abilities etc
Reason has a load of different sound modules, synths, drums or you can sample your own now with ReCycle
Is there anything MPC can do that PCs cant or is it simply a matter of personal preferance???

Any suggestions are helpfull its a big diff in ££££ we're talkin here

it is a matter of personal preference....IT DONT MATTER WHAT YOU USE ITS HOW YOU FLIP IT...i dunno how many times this has to said but its the goddamn truth

ur sounding lame as hell.if ur doing good with reason why by with an MPC. Just get a trigger finger and call it a day. Quit being a follower and do what u want instead of follwoing MPC hype

If u know how to make beats it dont matter what u use, it just comes down to personal perfernce. Some people like SUV's some people like convertables. They all have a steering wheel and a break pedal.

I like my MPC casue i like the hands on approach as well as the sequncer, with that being said my boy uses reason and he is dope, another uses logic and he is dope. I know cats who have the lateist MPC(some cats on these boards) who suck. Moral of the story, if u got skills they will shine threw no matter what u use. If u suck, ur gonna suck no matter what u use

I can make a beat in any of those apps casue i understand how to make beats... I choose my mpc casue thats what i like....

Why should i convince u to use an MPC?? thats wack man, your sounding real lame asking a question like that. Quit bitching, stick with reason and pratice the art of actually making tracks.

I used to use reason then I switched to an mpc.
this is what I like about the mpc
more hands on feel
quicker to make beats
all of a sudden sh!t started sounding better
it just plain is easier for me to get my ideas down
its alot faster

the only thing I miss about reason is some of the effects, and the ability to sequence out a whole song really easily.

In my opinion the mpc was a huge improvement, also with reason you are limited to the amount of synths you can use. Last time I checked only a few made by propellerhead were compatible.

I don't use reason for anything anymore

What U Do when U buy an mpc is that U buy a part of legacy a part of music history an categoristic sound .. A computer doesnt have those kind of amplifiers that can give that push in the sound.

Its a matter of taste ... If U like to work visually as much as as U Do by ear
U should keep on doing your thing with pc`s

If you are into find that break chop it and reprogramit using your nothing else but your ears get an mpc ..

good luck /Peace

If you're already comfortable making tracks with Reason, then just get the Recycle and keep moving. If it ain't broke (for you) don't fix it.
If you make a major switch (to whatever machine) you're dealing with a whole other learning curve, etc......and you might find that you still like using Reason better.

its just there a lot of anti PC noise out there and you just cleared it up

maybe i phrased it wrong, i wanted to know why one over the other
and a forum dedicated to MPCs may have been able to offer helpful pro and cons to someone trying to figure out whether to spend serious cash or not if you look at my original post, wasnt trying to get anyone upset, na mean

iv seen many posts on these boards to the effect of 'you aint keepin it real if you dont use an MPC' mayb thats lame

Madlib uses a Dr. Sample 303.
DangerMouse uses Acid.
9th Wonder uses Fruity Loops.
Neptunes use Reason.
They all got beats.
Fuuk "keeping it real."

Yea there are alot of cats who think if u aint using an MPC you aint keeping it real

I aint one of them, usually cats who think like that aint that good. When u get to a certain point as a producer you realise that the equiment that you use is just a tool. The only thing that really matters at the end of the day is the music. Ive said this a number of times to cats ive beefed with on these forums, let your music speak for you

Ive sat down and made beats on reason, logic, FL etc.. My shit came out sounding the same becasue no matter what i used my style is my style...
Again when u know what ur doing all it comes down to is personal prefernce...
