i doubt anyone in hear even owns a DAT machine let alone even knows what one is...

anyway you can use most brands, like Tascam, Foxtex, Sony etc, u can plug via Digi or Analogue.

thought why would u wanna do that anyway?

It's much cheaper and more effective to buy a soundcard with digital I/Os and record to hard disk than having to deal with DAT recorders that have problems with certain tapes.

tape is loveable but unfortunately on its deathbed....digital is the way to go now.

Oh my good! I feel like a dinosaur here. Well, I'm not mixing my stuff myself, so what is the most convienient format to transfer to before sending to the mixing engineer?

I wan't as little hassle as possible.

But then you need a mult-in firewire soundcard or something, right? I have an ibook so that means firewire or usb.

What external soundcards do you guys use?

get a standalone CD recorder.
same as a DAT tape type thing, cept you get higher qualities, and its direct to CD. so you'll have a decent usable copy.

that's why i sometimes record my drum tracks and bass (and sometimes vox) from digital to tape and then back to digital.... 8) it's worth it, i agree that harmonic distortion is the shit. i love it. however, it's not suited to today's workflow/effects, etc - so it should be used as a little nicety that is added post production...in my opinion.
