I used to make like 10 beats then pick the 4 or 5 I liked to develope into complete songs. Now I can take any pattern and develop a complete song from it. It's part of the fun part for me still.

Digging is also a very important part of beat making. Finding the right sounds help you be more creative with your sequencing. Trying to make something out of nothing takes more time.

When it comes to the mainstream, as long as you can dance to it in the clubs it's good. When it comes to the underground, it's about the true love for music. i make House as well bro, i think the fundamentals are the same cos i know what u mean about feeling the need to add stuff when it sounds okay.

the way i stay focussed is not to think that i'm ever finished, and that whatever i come up with is constantly a work in progress so if i'm feeling a minimal 2 bar loop i'll leave it and concentrate on how i could change it up in a next sequence

something that gets me everytime i'm out in a club is how the tracks that really get me going are usually so simple in terms of b-line, chords/melody and the real magic is in structure, eg drop one clap at the end of the 4th bar or some random extra kicks, a repetitive cowbell driving the whole tune smacks it when you drop from chorus to verse again

last night i spent 3 hours listening to the same 4 bar loop, muting tracks here n there to see what sounds catchy & how i will end up putting it all together. i woke and couldn't wait to hear that shyt again!

also i've copied the chords and melodies from my favorite artists and they sound great but nowhere near the final thing, that's when you realise how much effort they actually put in with all the extra things that make up the final product

i feel you thats me for sure i have three zips full of half made beats but there stuck on the sequencing part, it's just tryin to build a full song that gets me stuck...

but i tell you this i hear the improvement already from this thread you guys with your tips and techniques really opened my mind to different sequence building ... thanks for the help fellas much appreciated.
