when monitoring mixes low......

I'm starting to listen to my mixes at average volume as well as low. I have a question though. When monitoring low should I lower the volume on my monitors and have the main fader at around -.05dB or should I leave the volume on my monitors all the way up and bring the main fader volume down? Does it make a difference?

DONT TOUCH THE MASTER FADER!!!

EDIT: unless youre working "in the box" then feel free to use the master fader on your mixer but dont touch the master fader in your DAW


another edit: leave the master fader at unity gain (0)
