ok, um i'm just wondering incase i'm still playing this thing in ten years. does anybody know if u can buy led's from akai, also maybe a new screen when it burns out (i know it wont for a long time but i dont want to not have a screen or have to buy another unit if it's ten years old). also maybe we should get a backup harddrive because does'nt computer tecknology become obsolete pretty quick? anybody thought about this? i know they sell new switches, but what about the led's under them? radio shack? any reply's would be appreciated. one

the led will probably last longer than anything else in your mpc - the screens are built to last.

I gotta disagree with you. The screen on the 1K will eventually wear out just like any other backlit LCD screen. The best thing to do is to keep the unit powered down when not in use to prolong it's lifespan. Just about all the gear I've seen with dead screens were due to having the units running 24/7, but even if you don't have it powered up all the time, there's still no avoiding the inevitable. If I decide to keep my 1K for many years to come, I'd personally invest in some replacement parts if there's a chance that they may become obsolete (and cost alot more for any remaining stock). I don't expect my display to die out on me anytime soon, but I'd like to be prepared eventually.

there was a post a while back about the fact that the screen on the mpc 1000 is in fact not an LED but an LCD. the difference is, if you don't know what these stand for, that it's not a light emitting diode but instead a liquid crystal display, a lot like what's in a calculator. LCDs last a lot longer.

i think it was stereoroid who posted the first time about this. i'll try and search for it.

I agree that LCDs last longer than LEDs. My MC-202 from 1983 has no problem at all with the original LCD. The only problem is that when the backlit LCDs (from Akai and other manufacturers) die on you, there's probably no other choice than to replace the entire display. If there's a way to repair a backlit LCD without having to replace it, I'd definitely like to find out more about it.

Thanks for linking that thread.

I think I saw Rhythm posting somewhere on the boards just recently, either in MPC Studio Environments or Off Topic.

LEDs can burn out eventually, but you can find replacements easily from Radio Shack or anywhere else online.

You are talking rubbish if the light on your screen goes on an akai sampler all you have to do is replace the backlight, Ive done it on my s950 and 3000 . here is a link to a web site that sells them (ive not used them!):

[url]http://www.midi-rakete.de/eng/elfolie.htm[url]

you can also buy them off of ebay.

mpc1000s use a different backlighting than 3000s. again, the 1000's display is more like a pocket calculator's than a 3000's.

i'm not accustomed to distorted's posts being anything distantly resembling rubbish. thanks for the link though, that's interesting - i can't imagine staring at a 3000's white screen for so long! that would kill me...

but dj shadow did it and does it well, so it goes. i wouldn't mind seeing one of those things sometime.
