I'm thinking of getting a G5

Easy all

Using 2000xl - great fun. Wanted to hook it up ro my PC, but I have had enugh of the PC crashing and gettin viruses and the rest. Instead, Im gona get a MAC - a mate has one and he assures me that they are smoother and are designed for more creativity.
Im thinkin of gettin a G5 and Logic Express. Anybody know of the specs I shud be lookin for ie RAM, harddrive space, processor speed, soundcard??
Also - is Logic Express a good starting audio/midi software?

Yep, just stay away from the earlier single G5's and go for a dual. You can even get away with a new G5 iMac. MPC Pgm Maker is the sh*t. Also, I would spring for the Academic version of Logic Pro. You get tons more instruments and it's only $499.

What do mean by a 'dual' tho Fire. Also - any ideas on what soundcard I should be after?

I will have to enquire about the dual processor. Does the specs I put up include a dual processor??

The new iMacs are good. Really, anything with a G5 in it will serve your purpose. I just advise against an older single processor powermac for technical reasons. The iMac specs you posted are good. I went for the dual 1.8ghz powermac because it's a little more powerful and it's more expandable. But the new iMacs have quality components now, so unless you are heavy into graphics, I would go with an iMac to save money. And don't buy the extra memory from Apple, they'll rob you. Get an extra 512mb from crucial.com.

Excellent quality, low-cost memory for the iMac (or other Macs) can be ordered from New Egg. It will cost you less than Crucial and it's shipped nearly the instant you place the order online. Get at least 1 GB. The savings for just a 512 MB module isn't worth it. 1 GB costs about $100 with shipping. If you want 2 GB, order two separate modules. Their specs are so good that you will have a matched set even without paying the extra $25 for it.

Yeah, two dual-core processors. Should pretty fast. But the real jump in performance will come when the Intel G5s (G6s?) start shipping.

For general music use, the iMac you spec is plenty fast though. I mean, if you want to run millions of plugins and tons of softsynths only the latest most souped up G5 will do, but I used to run Logic Pro on a G4 800mhz, get 24 tracks and a bunch of plugins without any problems. So the iMac should be sweeeeet.

But yeah, do get at least 1GB of RAM.
