Yes, you can actually make a hard hitting track without a bassline (like a bass guitar or low filtered piano).

I've done both and have gotten good responses from producers and normal heads.

Well if you rockin free wit no quantise than resolution is not a facter to you. The reason we double the tempo is to double the resolution. All that means is it gives you more ticks in between each bar which in turn makes tha notes line up better or sumthing like that. All I know is that it makes tha beats have a certain feel. Theres a whole long ass thread about this. You should realy do a search and read up on it its quite interesting.

The only way for double res to work on a break drum loop would be to sample the break and chop out the kick and snare and replay them.

I dont like sampling entire breaks and using that as my drum pattern. I like playing out all my ish it feels wierd using someone elses drum pattern. But thats just me

We all started out a newb though. Nobody pops out the womb making killer beats. We all got to work at it. Whats the next level after newbie cause that where I think I'm at.

Theirs two types of newbies in my opinion, newbies to making beats and newbies to using the MPC. I'm a newbie to the mpc but definately not a newbie to making beats. Although I dont know about all the technical stuff u guys talk about on here I can make a dope ass track on the MPC. Some people just arent cut out to make beats. Theirs nothing worse than asking stupid questions, Even though i just got my mpc i look at some of the questions asked and Im like "Dog thats so easy to do, Just sit down and fuk around for a few minutes and youll figure it out." But maybe thats just me, I dont let my mpc tell me no, Whatever i wanna do I just figure that shit out.

Yeah I know what you mean. I think some people ask those questions just to mess with people. I don't see how you can get a mpc and not sit and mess with everything as soon as you plug it up!

Yo I am new to the MPC2k and MPC60II I had them for awhile but do tsome obligations with the military and I had to go fight in the streets of Basarah, Iraq for a few months. Anyway I dont do hip hop. I program HOUSE beats. I wanted to know when you program your stuff do you do this in real time or step edit. I mean after you speed up the tempo to increase resolution?

everything is done in realtime. The tempo is not speeded up after. Its speeded up first. say you want a beat at 90 tempo but you want increased resolution. Set your tempo to 180, adjust your time sig, and record your beat. Thats that. Of course you wanna still program your drums in real time as if it was realy at a 90 tempo.

Most of the time drums make the difference to me, bassline come second.

i think people get scared by technology far to often, for newbies i can see how that can be easily overwhelming... but i thought from the title of this thread that this was gonna be about rookie producers not newbies.. but whatever...

Maybe its me but that doubling tempo shit doesnt work, if you still use quantize the notes are basically playing on the same ticks. The only work around is turning off quantize, that really does magic for hi hats and congos if you have good timing.

That's what I thought.

The main thing is heart.If you don't put your heart into every track it's all in vain.
