midi recording

HEY whats going on, ive been stressin over this shit for the last couple days now...heres the question, i got my mpc hooked up to my keyboard, modules, and mixer and all the sounds come out of my amp. I can play and record the programs from the module on my mpc, but i cant record from my keyboard onto my mpc. This sucks cause i cant really play any riffs or chords without the synth. Anybody know why i cant record from the keyboard onto the mpc.....thanks, peace

Hook the MIDI like this:

Keyboard out -> MPC In 1 -> MPC Out A -> Keyboard In
MPC Out B -> Other module In.

Route the hookup within your software so it's reading from the correct MIDI In port, or make sure to set modules to receive the correct

On the MPC, when recording you'll want to keep each track on a different channel. First, set the track to MIDI rather than Drum, switch to the channel you want (1-16) and set the A/B to which module you're trying to control, in this case A for the first keyboard. Be sure to set the channels of any instruments you want to play on the keyboard to match up to the tracks you're recording on the MPC. You could also use the keyboard to control other sound modules this way, routing the incoming data out the other out on the MPC and recording the data for the other modules using the existing keyboard.

thanks alot man, i got it to record. But when i set the track on the mpc to the same channel as my keyboard and play a note, it goes crazy and keeps on repeating and shit, any clue why .

This is probably caused by note doubling, wherein the note on and off messages are sent by both the MPC and the [insert keyboard name].

There are two solutions.

One:
Disable Local control on your keyboard. Refer to the manual for this. This will prevent the note messages in the keyboard itself from triggering the tone generator, and instead the notes will pass through the MPC which will then trigger the notes. This lets you also control other pieces of gear via the same keyboard, without having to mute or cut the volume on the keyboard itself. Simply select the B out and play the sound module there.

Two:
Disable MIDI Thru on the MPC. This is accomplished by selecting the Channel on the MPC track and hitting open window. Experiment, as I've never needed this. (always used the first solution)

Word that shit worked i just turned the soft thru off on my mpc and everything is all gravy, i appreciate that shit alot.

Local off (instead of soft thru off) is usually preferred if you use a combination of sound modules and a controller keyboard.
