hardware or software compressor.... which one?

I really don't know what to be doing when I use my outboard behringer composer pro, so much so that I think if I record a beat into my computer through it the effect is irreversible, so I am thinking do I need the composer pro? Can I just compress the beat using a software plug-in like logics compressor after recording it dry into the computer?

What do you guys think?

I think you should learn how to use your gear. There's heaps of online tutorials and articles, go read some.
