Doom doesnt really brag about anything. very down to earth fellow. he is friends with people i know who own a record shop in minneapolis. everyone i have met who is on rhymesayers is really chill... yeah it isa lot easier to make music nowadays than before.... so what? technology evolves! get over it....

Something I've noticed, besides me just explaing how I Can't stand how these newcomer beat makers like dangermouse and 9th wonder and others that are forefronting the wack laptop revolution (as stated above), I noticed that people, mainly women for some reason say they like this new stuff and as we talk about it they always say " well i like it compared to whats been out recently"..so basically it gets an "OK" because of what someone else was doing on T.V. and radio? Why must we lower our standard because of whats been out recently? I can't hold my Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Wu-Tang, De La Soul, Kool G Rap records and convince myself that these newcomers fit the bill. T.V. and Radio don't even exist to me so I can't compare Dangerdoommickeymouse whatever or Pete Rocks children..I mean little brother to whats on the radio..I can only compare it to the official hip hop I grew up with that sounded complete and full. I bet Classic might feel me on this one or maybe not. Did somebody really say the mouse dude was "genius" for putting that soft Grey album together??? First time my friend played it for me I thought his younger brother was messing with his music program and making little music lol. The samples weren't even timed right, drum sequences were garbage, sound quality worse. I should put out a better Grey album and use a laptop the way it probaby could have be freaked, a lot better then that. Anyway, originally I was responding to Qoorbz

"i doubt people have even heard this album. seems like a bunch of wack ass mainstream heads in this ****"

That boiled me up cuz the first time I ever heard doom after the whole KMD stuff I was making fun of him in the car rapping with marbles in my mouth.."skim scamma skeema meema feema dreama" and whatever. until all theese white college dreddy head kids started getting upset and I felt the vibe of dooms cult following lol. Same people thought Talib Kweli was better then MosDef..imagine that?

We need to stop believing that everyone with a lyrical verbal expression thats not about clothes hoes and cars IS actually skilled enough to rep this hip hop sht for real, and if its so refreshing to you to hear something that goes against Radio or T.V and your under the age of 24..go get yourself the Digable Planet, De La Soul, Black Sheep, First 3 Tribe Albums, Gangstarr, Common Sense 2-3 album, BlackMoon, Bahamadia, OutKast, Freestyle fellowship, and Del Thefunkyhomosapien albums from 93-94 ( and many more) and hear what was going on then cuz everyone thats doing something now somewhat substantial in the so-called underground are all trying to take from that era OR bring that era back in someway thru their own laptop music...sounding like reject 93 groups with clock radio speaker drums. Unless you hear electric guitars or something stupid out of jefjux.

My friends know 9th wonder and the mouse guy and they play me stuff they work on weekly and I'm like "are they seriously gonna try to put that untimed sht out next? When the FCK did these people start making beats in 98 or something??" Whats bad is that i really like little brother's raps but only on J Dilla, MadLib, Pete Rock's beats, or when Kanye feels like getting it together. These veteran producers are using computers to make their music too as well as myself so it has NOTHING to do with me getting over the fact that "it IS a lot easier to make music nowadays than before.." but when you're still developing ears for skill and perfection you have no business putting records out.. thanks to bobbito of course.

Make it how ever you make it, but we should be amazed at what we're hearing and not even be able to tell that a laptop was used. Its called integrity. Saying that its easier to make music nowadays means what?? that easy music means good music?? This "easier way" is producing poor quality results obviously for those that know what the real sht is. Cuz this new sht is only targeted to folks who don't know any better anyway cuz they would never try to put any of that to any veterans, they just wanna feel the respect and response that native tongue got then and recreate what infuenced them.

Imagine if Common Sense never made "I used to Love H.E.R" and Organized Confusion never made "Stress".. lol

Dax i tried to read your whole post but about half way through your rambling i decided to stop reading.Just because you know a little about Hip Hop's history don't think you're the only one.Anyone can name names but to really be there when it went down is a different story.(Slick Rick)I know it's cool to think you are real Hip Hop but let me tell you(DAna Dane)there is no such thing. It can't be because Hip Hop is the Art of Biting. We just do it with style(E.P.M.D).

Don't let the avi fool you.(Kool Herc)I compare songs that i like to others i hear on the radio because there has to be some gauge to what get's played.I like music.no wait good music i don't care how it was produced.Via laptop or Mpc,hell even a garbage can lid and a 4 track.(Doug E.Fresh)There's no set Bpm,T-sig or drum pattern template.Music should evolve and be different. Not monotonous and stale.

Yeah I bet music producers who were using tape and real musical instruments feel the same way about us. These days you can have a whole band using a motif. Music is always gonna evolve. I personally don't wanna use a computer to make music but that doesn't mean I knock the cats who do.

I been a deep deep over obsessive hip hop head since Rakim, Slick Rick, De La Soul, Nice & Smooth, Large Professor, Pete Rock, Gangstarr and so on...but I can't really stand these new comers using $800 laptops with $130 software and making music calling their stuff classic and official. Its beacuse the producers like Marly Marl and everyone from my era really focused on the quality of the mixing in the music, messed with a lot of EQ for days just to make a snare, and now these new dudes are bragging about how Fast they made their album and how they didn't even put any effort into it but its gonna do so well. 9th wonder is another one..talking about he knows people that can't hear their basslines..well, I know some laptop producers that can't hear the fact that their kick and snare are literally the same through their whole album!! (little brother) I'm not going for it..we need Primo Back and I'm glad Pete Rock is getting work with Ghostface and Dipset so people know hes very relevant still.

BOOOO!!!!

How can you deny 9th Wonder's skills? He's very good at what he does

no $hit. hearing music and not liking it is your right. hearing music and scrutinizing it because of the way its made? thats prudish and petty. if your going to analize it inthatway... maybe you should listen to heiruspecs, or the roots?
By dax917 Mon Oct 31, 2005 9:31 am
So Stryke..Rambling huh? lol. Did any of the artists i mention make music monotonous and stale?? Oh and please not The Ruler and Dana Dane's name in the same sentence..that hurts hehe. Anyway, you guys seem to think I'm talking about the fact that the music is made from a laptop. Thats only a percentage of it. And actually stryke agreed with my point, thanks. Cuz if you read my last paragraph it clearly says "Make it how ever you make it, but we should be amazed at what we're hearing and not even be able to tell"..meaning tell the difference between anything done in any technology..it should just be banging as a whole. But thats not whats happening when I listen to it. And I know the truth why it sounds that way. Higher and more advanced ears do exist. These dudes get over on the people that dont know any better or choose to settle.

If ya wanna settle for weak tracks then go for it lol. I actually felt about 2 beats 9th wonder did..but ivincent, how can I deny 9th's skills? Easy, by comparing it to music I always play in the house, its not consistant. But I give him more props then the mouseketeer though, maybe cuz 9th peoples keep force feeding me. Am I really supposed to put him in the same category as Primo, Pete Rock, Prince Paul, Dilla, Or MAdLib?? Sht my 12 year old nephew even said that them beats dont sound as good as what I usually play in the house. I'm not gonna settle for this weak sht cuz a bunch of people wanna let anything thats not "superficial" just walk in the door for the sake of being "open-minded" cuz as a revolutionist if anyone embraces change its me.

Now, for naming names. I havent really named names at all. I only named the recording artists I love..but you should give me credit for not name dropping at all cuz if i wanted to use names for credibility in the first place I could have easily started out by saying at 13 as a Zulu, Bambataa put me on to promoting for native tongue when I had no place to stay and taught me about hip hop origins first hand, Herc was there all the time putting us on to the rest so I know how he feels even today, even when rap was first kickin off years ago I was there when my older sister made me come out when she used to chill with legs and i was bboyin even back then at 5 years old, years later before Dj Wiz Kid died I was his artist, I worked on the "Shine" track for Pete Rock and CL Smooth at Unique studio and me and Tre produced Climax for C.L Smooth, when C.L drove me home he was the first one to really talk about how the underground is trash for that very same reason that I'm saying it now. And with Fat Beats and jefjux its no different then how puffy and bad boy records was the mid to late 90's. instead of puff saying "anybody opposing us call them haters" so his bullsht can fly..now its changed to "anybody trying to call us out on our music just call them ignorant" same reverse psychology, different genre.

I'm sure you stopped reading by now again haha. But I can get deeper then that with who else I talked with (like crash crew, killa priest, etc) about this same topic and trust me my point of view isnt only just mine, it comes from a lot of the mouths of new, old, and older School Vets that these new comers is looking up to. For those who care, CL happened to say that there was a great time when the people in your crew heard you do something that wasn't top game they didn't let you come out with that..if it was wack then people put their foot down.. he said "that sht is missing nowadays man! in the rymes, in the music, the mix..thats why its the way it is, theres no intimidation factor to keep sht in line" Most of you wouldn't understand what I'm talking about though, and by now I wouldnt expect you to. To you there is no such thing as wack. The only thing thats wack is music thats commercial and on T.V. and anyone that uses a word more then 4 syllables long is automatically good, or condidered decent hip hop. Stop comparing these rappers to MTV, BET or HOT 97 and start comparing them to hip hop vets and see how they hold up. And dont do the comparison to an 1983 Doug E Fresh record either cuz you know damn well there was a Nas illmatic and main ingredient etc and those records where plenty innovative.

As far as what I'm doing..I'm just carrying on tradition the way I was taught. If we hear something not standard we speak up and diss it. Shut the sht down before the people that don't know what criteria to juge it upon get to it and praise it for being "different", thats how it is point blank. Don't expect anything different from me. I hope you get the point that its not about the Laptop situation. I already know what your responses are going to be so please talk about the topic and refrain from accusing me of name dropping. Peace

Equipment is completely irrelevent yes music can be made quickly on equipment that is easily attainable. This is not native american dance traditions that must be kept sacred, its hip hop and it will evolve as time goes on sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. You are a DINOSAUR. who cares stick to your old way of thinking. You are a cliche. Hip hop history is just that history.
Dangermouse is refreshing and his beats that you spoke of on the grey album: "The samples weren't even timed right, drum sequences were garbage, sound quality worse." What the hell are you talking about samples weren't timed right? yeah your right dude. He should just do some tired boombap ish and spent a week eqing his snare . Then you say you could do better? well then why aren't we talking about your beats right now?
Then you talk about 9th wonder and criticize him for using the same drums on different tracks. Again, who cares some of the greatest music around from jazz to rock use the same drum kit spanning their whole careers. You gonna tell me Elvin Jones should of used a different kit on every song his drum sound certainly wasn't different on every track.

While your spending time eqing your snare like your idols ill just be here trying to make something fresh and not worrying about the culture that came before and the rules that I have to adhere to.

oh and who gives a shit what your 12 year old nephew thinks about anything. I am sure you already brainwashed him anyway with your hip hop dogma.

I like alot of older hip hop stuff but those albums can't sustain my need for new and different things. All those artists you mentioned are great but to be honest I don't want to hear that stuff anymore I grew tired of it. I dont hold onto it like it's gospel.

Once again i stopped reading about halfway through but i did notice this. You criticized me for comparing newer music to older stuff but you just did the same thing. So i guess there must be some sort of gauge to music huh?
