Whadup,

No this is not for the offtopic forum...This is a technique.

How do you make your beats?? are you clean/sober? or do you really really need to drink or smoke something??

I really cant make a beat if I haven't smoke some weed or drink some whiskey..I'll get in my element, I'm that high I think I'm in the matrix surrounded by samples, beats, MPC..etc etc..

How do you create beats???Clean or High?

I used to do drugs and make music for a long time.I also used to think i needed them to be creative, and it worked for a while. But then that stuff started to interfer with the living proses, you know small stuff like breathing.Well ima open myself up here, I BECAME A ADDICT.You know sex drugs & rock&roll. My music suffering was the last of my worries. I remember i bought a yamaha 4 track recorder but could never figuer out how to use it -pass the joint.
Anyway i dont even drink beer now- nothing-o yea,
try going to music school high all the time! No diploma for me.Dont believe the hype jin & juice might work for a while, but if your not carefull you could get traped in the bottle, or worse.

I usually puff a little while music making, but I never get drunk. I'll have a beer or two now and then, but I haven't gotten DRUNK in a long time.
For gigs though - CLEAN.

Sober as well. Remember, only dopes, use dope. j/k that's some cheech and chong stuff that I remember. But exactly what Raven said "I also used to think i needed them to be creative" That's what happens when you do do that stuff too much, you start to rely on it. Like you can't enjoy things like everyone else does normally without having to get high.

I dont drink alcohol. I've gotten high a few times and made some wierd a$$ beats, but I gave up smoking like 3-4 years ago. Sometimes, I'll go to Starbucks and order a drink with like 1 or 2 shots of expresso and just blast off. I'll be all amped up and make some far out beats. Hey, Starbucks espresso beats taking Speed;) Holla if ya hear me! So, yea Im a "clean n' sober" beatster...Lava Lamp, Nag Champa Insence, maybe a porn flick or two, and a good zone...and Im off to beat land :D and "If Im not back in 5 minutes, just wait longer"-Ace Ventura...peace

I love to smoke and drink, but I am usually sober when I write beats.
I call this MPC crack! It is its own drug.

I found that being drunk, I would end up producing some sort of little kid type beat, that was typical of the early days of my beat production.
I think i just get too damn sloppy.

When Im high, I will spend hours spacing off in some sort of trance, while working on the same beat. The outcome of this sittuation, was usually a pretty good beat that took WAY too long to create.

I only recomend smoke, when programming dance style music.
You know, that hypnotic type shit that makes you just zone out.
At least this way you are conforming to the style of music.

Real Talk.... i been there before, i'm still recovering....

i have this process which works for me.

First of all bear in mind that it generally takes me at least a week, maybe as much as a month to make a beat (damn that 9-5).

I'll get the initial idea whilst simply listening through my crates ... usually i do this whilst i'm gettin a bit stoned ... but not completely zooted.
so then i get a few sounds and drums kickin about and have a play.

Then later on or perhaps the next day i'll approach the beat with a clean head.... sometimes i'll even re-sample all the sounds change the drums etc, but the initial idea i had will still be there.
After a hard session of fine tuning, stretching, filtering eqing etc i'll leave the beat in a unfinished and basic state.

Then its fun time ....

after saving the ruff draft (dilla lol) i'll get as high as i feel is neccessary and really get into the next type of shit with the beat, working out patterns and sequencing etc.
Although this isn't routine and sometimes it's better to keep my head totally straight for the whole beat.
WE PLACE TO MANY RULES ON OURSELVES

Basically... people focus too much on the negative effects of substances (of which there are many) but remember that the caffine that you drink & those microwave and mcdonalds meals that you eat also **** you up. The shit you have no control over like pollution and **** passive smoking **** you up.
If you keep the weed and beer in control... that is, when YOU use IT instead of IT using YOU it can be a great thing for both your beats and your mentality, but (like anything) it can also result in the opposite if it's not taken responsibly.

This isn't an advert for the benefits of weed smoking cos every person is different and i want no part in influencing peoples opinions (& lives), personally i smoke a lot of weed (bad for health and pocket) but I'd never ever do ecstacy of cocaine or nothin like that). The final word is that experience is everything in this world ... what else have you got? ... but experience doesn't neccessarily mean trying everything that you can get your hands on (you shape your own existance)

*and we all know madlib & doom get high as **** whilst makin beats ( i am influenced by my idols hahahah)...

peace to all
(i am in work and bored)

hehe lol..

I just smoke one good joint. Then I'm gonna search for some samples what I feel..
Then I search some drums etc...when I got everything. I'm gonna roll another one and get some beer or whiskey...and then its all beginning dope beatmaking is starting

I used to never play stoned until like 8 years ago, but, sometimes those tedious tasks that programming requires, is better without weed. Better to keep the brain intact. Creating, however, that's up to the individual. Feeling good and in the groove is where I wanna be.

When I make beats or jam out playing instruments i'm always sober, but after I'm done with a beat with all the changes and all then I might have a couple drinks and take it to my crew and have them all listen for the final verdict, If everyone digs it then its pretty much done, if the vibe ain't right I scrap it or re-edit it. There's some really special ones that I have that nobody is ready to listen to yet that I keep for myself that came out with me sober so I know I could do crazy sh*t like that without drinking. BTW I rarely ever smoked but I decided to give it up and will never do it again, I didn't see the advantage of it so I just quit.
