Yo, If I was you I'll get The cubase SE like the other guy said for Recording, Reason for Making tracks, and SOny Sound Forge for editing samples and sounds. and if you really want to get Protools instead of the cubase. You already have a m_Audio interface you can get the m-powered protools for $199.99 at academicsuperstore.com.

it depends

there are several types, sequencers, synths, effects plugins

Reason is all in one, user friendly and VERY deep

Reaktor is Not user friednly, sounds incredible tho and can do --anything--

Cubase and Cakewalk are two sequencing/ processing programs

Sound Forge/ Adobe Audition for audio processing

reason 3.0 and albeton live 5.0 is a whole studio right there. You will also want to proabally get a wave editor like soundforge or wavelab, and recycle to chop up loops. But reason is a great program because it is literally a virtual studio, with synths samplers and dope effects units. But its all self contanied unless you get recycle or painstakingly make your own programs with wav files. Ableton is a great editor for loops, and real nice multitrack, with effects and use of vst instruments and effects. Ableon is real good for routing and recording and then pitching, timestrecthing, and whatever else you would want to do. The two together are bad ass and i use them everyday. Cubase is frustrating to me, protools is aight, but nothing special imo. Sonar isnt really my thing either. Ableton is the most comfortable as a daw to me.

well see I like cubase, and not reason as much

Tho it sounds great and has lots of capabilities, i don't really like the layout that much I always feel like I'm scrolling up and down my rack constantly

but I started with cubase so that explains that

oh try Waves plugins you won't be disappointed

i have to agree with binger with this one live5 and reason 3.0 is a very nice setup but if you have a few bills to spend live5 and native instruments komplete 3 is the ticket.

native instruments komplete 3 is reason 3.0 on steriods.

To make beats REASON 3 is the slickest. I love every thing about it.
I use Nuedo wich is probably overkill for you so CUBASE is the one.
