What are you trying to produce?

I'm just curious - since there are so many peeps on this forum, what sort of music are you all trying to produce?

OR - is it just a question of making beats as personal expression in the form of your own music?

You creating beats for MCs?

You creating some instrumental Hip Hop?

Are you creating music for a particular sub-genre of music, e.g. Crunk/Grime etc etc?

Be honest - you must have idols - are you looking to create something similar in style to those you idolise?

Is your style different in any particular way to producers who's work you've heard before?

What sets you apart from other producers/your peers?

i just love music so thats why I do it. I make them hoping that someone would eventually spit over it but I just like making the music. my genres change from time to time. sometimes doing hiphop/rap, r&b, underground type stuff...i have a lot of people i look up to, but I realized how important it is to have your own sound, so I just do me.

my main influence is Kerri Chandler, also Masters At Work, Ted Patterson, Terry Hunter, MK, Steve Hurley, Todd Terry

I'm hoping to get vinyls out there, which in todays market could mean setting up an independent label

i would say what separates me from the rest is the understanding to have your own sound and to keep it interesting to the ear

Something that i can look back on and say "Yeah,i made that"It doesn't have to move a million peolpe as long as the people i play it for like it,i think that would make me happier than anything.I want to do it all though,rhyme over some tracks and do alot of instrumentals as well.All being Hip Hop.

yeah i like it a lot when mcs show interest in my beats. but i make my music for me. i dont think its at all good to be trying to replicating other producers styles, even if you do it well and pull it off, you are still just replicating someone elses sound (*you know who you are!*). the most important thing for me at the moment is to make each beat different from the last and that they each have a there own purpose or vibe. i hate hearing thrown together stuff that hasnt had any thought put into it.

as far as producers i like. i love all the beanuts beats, but no way does any of my music sound anything like that.

one thing i've realised recently is just to let ideas develop and flow - meaning if something doesnt turn out to sound exactly how you first envisioned thats ok - as long as you've found something better or learnt something trying to get there.

my beats are nowhere near where i want them yet, i'm hungry to get there tho.

def just music to express myself. my best friend MC's so its fun to screw around but im mainly just experimenting right now. the move from software only to hardware has been exciting so far, but i kinda feel like im starting over!

nothing really makes me different i dont think, except maybe that i do it for the lifestyle, and the outlet....im not out bragging like "yeah, im a producer. u suk i rule" like a lot of people try to do.

i love pete rock, domino, heiruspecs, ANT, premier etc. i disagree about not trying to sound like someone else. trying to get sounds like other producers, or trying to hide the drum machine-ness pulls me in different directions, and has shown me what works and what doesnt.

I don't know. I produce hip hop sometimes. But I like to mess with things that are just.........MUSIC! Sometimes I will make a track that will have my friends like......HUH! What is this? But then again your still able to listen to it.

EXACTLY how i feel..........i've been writtin lyrics since 8th grade....damn near 9 years now....but its mainly always been as a form of expression, the only true outlet i had to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that i felt.....eventually, i wanted to put them over some beats, so i met up with a dude, made a couple tracks, but hated it....i felt like he didnt understand the conection between feeling in a beat, and feeling in words....he just kinda put kicks and snares together, and didnt have a lot of emotion in it ya know?.....so i thought, **** it..,,if i want a beat, i'm gonna make it myself......so i bought an MPC, and now i'm your idol ....just kidding... I have a long long time to go........

I listen to so many different kinds of music its hard to make jus one kind. Recently I seem to be coming out with a lot of detroitish house and techno. Maybe next month hip hop who knows! I also make drum & bass with a friend but dont use the mpc for that.

I think its important to be a versatile producer. Good example of this is a guy called moonstar. Makes wikid techno, broken beat and hip hop. Thats what I'm aiming to be like whilst finding my own sound.

its easier to make beats in genres i dont listen too as much...
but mainly i do rap

I myself have only just started, like in the last few months. Got my 2kXLMCD - still trying to get my head around that bad boy! I know where I want to go, and that's what keeps pushing me to learn how to use that big blue box of tricks.

It'll be a long time, and I have to develop my own style - but I know I want to produce something which is layered with lots of percussion, and is progressive in terms of how each tune develops.

My idols are Diplo, DJ Shadow, Madlib, Edan and peeps like dat. It's mainly hip hop that I'm moving towards, but I want to produce something that bridges gaps between genres and keeps people guessing, as well as interested.

I've started out trying to replicate a couple of tracks that I love, just to figure out what's been done, and how. I think that's helping me to develop my own techniques in terms of crafting a whole track, or just knowing where to start when I'm creating a beat.

I dunno - one thing's for certain - I do it for the love of music. I've got a crap car, bad clothes, and extremely poor personal hygiene - but that's cos the money goes into vinyl and time spent on the MPC. OK, so I was kidding about the personal hygiene bit!

It'll be a long time indeed before I start posting any of my work up in here!
