for those of you who are using these numbers for every one of your tracks, your sleepin hard! and I dont think this info was to be used for every one of your beats. maybe as a guideline to get you in the right direction, but I wouldnt take these numbers literally

Good stuff MACMAN but folks is right - There are some pretty big houses using nothing but software to run thier game...Most of us who own a professional studio, have a mic locker with all kinds of Mics for all kinds of recording applications. At a minimum, you need an overhead pair for stereo recording, vocal mics for both the female and male vocalist - some speciality drum mics, a stereo pair of large diaphram condensers, and no self respecting studio would be without an SM57 for the occassional guitarist who insists it's part of thier studio sound. Assuming you are only doing vox - you still gotta have a choice of mics as there is no one mic that is best for all vocalists...I've got over a dozen different mics and I've still got mics on my christmas wish list. And as for reverb - modeled reverbs are far superior to digital box jobs for many apps. I use both depending on the need. Free up ypur mind and your music will improve - there is no perfect gear setup. It depends on the use of the day - and each day is different. As for compression, you left out some class A winners and there are also some great soft compressors and even some decent ones built right into some digital consoles. One thing for certian, you need more than one if you can afford it. Peace
PS. Vocal booth = Dry. That's the whole point. Control room and sound stage - varying degrees of reflective vs dry. If you have a sound stage, it's nice to have some movable traps and pannels to allow different setups for different apps...

I don't mean any disrespect, but part of the reason why it's taking so long for your artist to come out may be because your spending too much money on your gear. I've been in the lab with folks that worked with dilla, ess band, Black milk, and a bunch of other cats from the D that are making moves.. done tracks with timberland, and various others, and what your saying contradicts everything I have ever heard. For the most part, you use what you got, and use what you need to make the track. If I don't have a $2000 mic, that doesn't mean that the song shouldn't be made. If I only have a behringer mixer should I assume I can't make a good sounding product? I've been up in Studio A (dearborn michigan) which is a top notch studio that's many major artists go for a professional product. They were SHOCKED when Waajeed plugged his MPC up and played the beat. His equipment? An MPC2000 and a turntable. No mixer, no eq's, no compressors. So sorry duke, I can't but that, "you gotta invest some money,' thing. Maybe folks have to invest some time in their equipment, and learn the tricks of the trade, but the gear doesn't mean anything if (1)you don't know how to use it or (2)your music doesn't sound good to begin with. Motown was started off a 4 track studio in the basement. The sound is legendary. Nowadays, you can buy a 32!! track recorder that fits in a gym bag (with hundreds of virtual tracks) and people still can't make a decent song, but, some of the most classic songs that we rememmber back in the day were made in bedrooms on 4 track casette tapes!
Personally, I haven't made a hit, or done anything major. I have made a lot of mistakes THINKING I needed gobs of gear, and listening to people on the internet tell me I needed this and that. Through my short years (about 5) I have had quite a few artists (Baaten (slum v) Guilty simpson (slum affiliate) (dj houseshoes (slum dj) Marv won (the guy in 8 mile that made eminem look like a fool during the freestyle) and many others that have shown interest in my work. If I didn't have a full time job, and work part time on houses, I would definately be doing something right now (as far as music goes). Now maybe in your feild of music, it may be different.. I'm more of a neo soul, hip-hop producer, but for me, I will use anything that I enjoy working with. Cheap, or expensive, but if it's cheap, I guarentee I can make it sound expensive.

Well duke, I have to ask you why that though would even enter your mind...anyways, I name drop because I can, not to make me feel better. I'm in the 'D' and around just about any and everyone that is making moves. I wouldn't drop a single name if I didn't know them, or anyone close to them, but I won't stick on that subject because I have nothing to prove to you, but I won't stop just because you don't want me to either... I'll move on. Most producers will tell you that the expensive gear isn't always the best gear. I've had equipment that was technically good, but since I couldn't understand it, I hated it. This is the main reason why I don't buy new equipment. I'll wait a few months and buy it used because most people that buy expensive gear won't figure out how to use it. If the most expensive gear was so much better then why is most of the music out today wack.. is this a coincidence?
