what about using a tape record,

Could someone do a demonstration for us who hasn't heard the SP1200 sound?
Nothing impossible, just sound of an original drumloop and same loop with 1200.
And maybe piano or something else melodic loop too?

I would like to see the difference.

i've tricked people into thinking i've used an sp1200 when all i use is a mpc1000 and reason.

mpc4000 will back me up on this. it sounds DAMN close.

i for one love the sp1200 sound, but only as an effect that i would like to control. it's a beautiful grittiness, one of the most pleasing distortions ever digitally created.

as a non-drummer who has been quoted as "the most syncopated muhfukker" i highly recommend this procedure on your kicks and snares - not to mention basslines (after being recorded via spdif).

i was wondering how to convert audio files to 12bit on computer...

i downloaded a couple audio converting programs along with trying to do it on the program i use for recording but they all seem to only convert to either 8bit or 16bit. anyone?

talking about the SP1200, are they easy to get hold of in the US? cos they seem pretty hard to find & expensive over here

I think that in order to obtain that same sound, you have to understand it for what it really is. First of all, its a 12-bit sampler with only 10 seconds of sample time. You have to sample everything in at 45 so that you can squeeze in the sample into the 1.5 sec banks. Then you slow the sample down to the pitch that you want it. This is what creates its unique timbre. With that being said, minimal sample time "forces" you to be more creative with whatever sample you use.

Im sure that you can "emulate" that sound on a computer but you will NEVER get the real aesthetic of the SP 1200...that's why the machine is so highly praised. Most of the new "beatmakers" have never played with one so they don't understand why it sounds the way it does. If you really want to get that SP sound, i suggest you go play with one and train your ears to understand why it sounds the way it does.

I know its just a typo, but so people dont get confused: The banks are 2.5 seconds, not 1.5 as written above.. So, 10 seconds total but spread across 4 x 2.5 second banks.
