Mixer Question

Yo! What's up everyone. I was wondering if anyone had a techinque to program a pause (mute) in your beats. I've tried everything possible but I can't seem to program the mute live like I want to. I mean I could go into step edit and do it that way, but that takes to much time. I know there's got to be another way. :

You could make a bunch of copies of your beat, and on each one mute different stuff out using the erase button....or just turn different tracks off.

That's kind of what I do now except for using the track mute function. Blaz4me showed me that this week at his studio but when I went home to try it out. I still couldn't program the mute live while dub mode.
