This is to help cats who's just getting started with midi and sampling with this combo. If you know what's up with these machines feel free to post some tips in here. PEACE.
Setup
Before you get started sampling and making beats with the S950 you will need to do some configuring on the MPC60. First you need to set up the pads in a chromatic order (Check elmacaco's post in the FAQ). Connect a MIDI cable from the MPC60's MIDI out 1 to the S950's MIDI in. Connect your sampling source to the line input on the front of the S950 and connect the Mix Out on the back of the S950 to your mixer. Go to the MAIN SCREEN on the MPC and select Chn 1A-Synth01A.
Sampling
To create a new program on the S950 hit EDIT PROGRAM, move the cursor to Select, Copy and press LETTER, change the name to "Test Beat". Now pick out a kick drum to sample, hit REC and name this sample "Kick". For the recording settings use the Analog input setting and use the default 10,000hz setting. For pitch, hit the desired pad you want to use for a particular sample like pad 1 Note 35. Now edit your sample to the correct start and end times, and then use the Discard function in edit mode to delete the unwanted portions of your sample. To setup the Keygroup hit EDIT PROGRAM, make sure "Test Beat" is selected, then go to page 5. In the Soft Sample field select Kick and hit ENTER, notice to the right of the Soft Sample it shows Note 35. Select 35 for the Low Key and 35 for the High Key. Now, sample a Snare drum using the same method as the Kick, except use Note 36. Hit EDIT PROGRAM, go to page 3 and add a Key Group using the + Key. Now, go to page 5, make sure KG2 is selected in the bottom left corner, select Soft Sample "Snare", and set the Low and High Keys to 36. If you want keygroups that span multiple pads or keys then just change the Low and High Keys accordingly. For example create a Keygroup using the Tone Program for the soft sample, set the Low Key at 51 and the High Key at 66. This keygroup can now be found at Bank B on the MPC, but the samples are not deep enough to use for Bass yet. EDIT SAMPLE "Tone" and change the pitch to around 80, now hit PLAY on the S950. That should give you a good idea on setting up different types of keygroups.
Tips
1) The S950 has 8 voices, the MPC60 has 16, it may make sense to sample drums and percussion with the MPC60 and sample instrumentation with the S950 to compensate for the S950's lack of Polyphony.
2) In addition to the lack of Polyphony Only one voice can play at a time through the 8 individual outputs. However the Mix output will play all voices at once. Intelligent use of the outputs is important.
3) Layer sounds by copying a keygroup and changing the Soft Sample. Try stacking percussion sounds and then resampling to the MPC60 for fat sounding Drum Kits.
