Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

ok, this is kind of an odd question, but i'm gonna ask it anyway.
I wanna be able to scratch a drum beat live on the turntable, loop it, then lay down a bassline(scratched again) then something else (a violin mayb) and that's my track made.

The thing is, this has to be done, live, on the fly, in a club. Just 1 turntable, 1 mixer, and an MPC-1000.

with the foot pedals, i think it might be possible, but i'm not really sure. Basically, i want to be able to use the MPC like a Boss loopstation guitar pedal.

anyone got any ideas as to whether this would be possible?

i wouldn't be able to do it. maybe if you got good enough....

i don't know if this is the tool for you.

i realise it's not exactly built for it, but i thought some inventive types out there might be able to think of a way.

At the moment I'm using the hold echo effect on a pioneer djm909 mixer, with a foot pedal. It works ok, but the problem is i have to preselect the BPM before i start, so if i'm slightly off it doesn't loop on time.

any more thoughts, or do i really have to buy the boss pedal?

yep, electrix repeater is exactly what i'm looking for, but i was kind of hoping i might be able to do something slightly similar with the MPC. Is there a way i can start recording and stop recording with the foot pedals, and then have the length of the sample i just recorded loop endlessly?

any ideas?

you want ableton live and a laptop. i'm gonna be trying that same thing using ableton live and serato scratch in my studio when i get the time to set it up and configure ableton properly.

check out this video

should give you some ideas

i know it doesnt help with using your 1k, but this is prob the best way to do it if your seriously need to work like that.

Hi bruxism,

I scratch/turntablism too and been playing with my boss rc-20 for quite some time now. I owned a mpc1000 and have a laptop with Live5.

USE A LOOPSTATION.

Yes, you can use the pedal inputs on the MPC1k to start en stop recording, but thats just the sequencer, you can't record audio into the mpc that way, the only hardware that can do that are some digitech guitar pedals (above GFX-4 i believe) and the repeater.

With Live, its getting a little better. STILL, u have to program the first 'layer' (or do you want to use a metronoom live??), have the bpm set and have to record EXACTLY within the loop, and you canNOT overdub!! So 'on the fly' is getting really tricky and hard. Its an intensive job. With a loopstation you can loop and overdub on the fly, no need for bpm and correcting your loops if something goes wrong. The RC-20XL even has a undo function which is usable while the thing is looping!

I have a clip of a turntablist called Excess, showing his tracks live with a powerbook, live, and a midi footcontroller. Its cool, but it isnt just the same as a loopstation.

Besides, a mpc1000 is 800 $, a decent laptop with midi controller 1000 to 1200 $ (and then u havent even got the ableton live program). A loopstation is 'only' like 200 to 300 bucks. There is even a new loopstation from digitech which takes .wav files from compact flash cards.

If you have any questions go ahead.

you can do some loop style stuff with the mpc 1000, but it's a little tricky. what i do is set up a sequence and a track with a blank program. on that track before there's any samples assigned to the pads, record note triggers at the beginning of the sequence. then in record mode, i use a foot pedal to start recording a sample (set to f5 button i think), and assign the sample to one of the pads that already has the note on recorded into the sequence, then when the sequence loops around the sample plays back in the loop. it's kinda tricky getting the right record input settings, and you need a metronome or a beat to play to, and you have to manually assign the sample to a pad after recording, but with a little practice it kinda does what your talking about.

What, with ableton live? I still do not find it very practical. I cant seem to find any stuff with ableton that is not dope, but since im used to the loopstation workflow, i may just have to switch the knob inside of my head. But, abletonlive has his advantages that you can switch loops on the fly, midi, sync and its stereo, but you can't really records audioloops on the fly (since u use ur hands for the turntables). But you CAN loop on the fly on a loopstation! I found mine used for 150 euro's, so thats like 175 dollar or something...u can amuse urself till you get a laptop :)

DFENS, if you have msn add me djdunic @ hotmail.com , i may have some other dope turntablism stuff.

Why not just use the loopstation? My friend kills it on that thing. I never saw anyone do anything like the shit my friend did... peep these tracks he did with the loopstation and some cool edit pro. He used the loop station for the basic structure of the song (drums, basslines, and scratching) and the rest (sound effects etc...) was added in later with cool edit:

The loop station is the way to go. I dont the mpc is designed for doing that. Same concept but slightly different. I think its ill what your trying to do tho. Hit me up and let me hear some of your track: [email protected]

Pz!
