Compression

Hi I was wondering if there was a way to manipulate compression on the mpc 2000xl. I hate that there is no compression on the MPC2kxl. My old mpc 1000 had compression on it but I traded it for the 2xl.

How can you manipute compression when it's not there in the first place?

You mean emulate? Nope.

the 1000 has compression? it must be shitty right? never heard it. sick freeware plugin is blockfish. muck up your drums real dirty like.

The closest thing to faking compression on the XL that I've found is........
If you turn the attack setting on your drum to 1 or 2. It puts a slight fade-up on the very beginning of the attack - making it softer, then just go to the mixer and turn the whole sound up a tiny bit. Sort of like what compression does.

Don't go above 2, or else it'll just remove the whole beginning of your sound.

This will obviously only work on drum sounds since all you can taylor is the attack.

This will NOT sound good on every drum. Sometimes it will change the character of the attack too much, and not sound good.......but I've done it on certain sounds where it actually sounded a little like compression (to me.)

Play with it, and decide for yourself.

Make sure you really understand what compression will do for you. I have compressors in my mixer, and I even spend money on the tube compressors. I ended up taking them back because I didn't notice anything significant for the money. If you sample you drums, chances are the sounds are already compressed. This is an area that I really know nothing about, and I've never really had a need for it either. Without a compressor, you can still make good music on the XL.. I do it all the time.

not really a compressed sound though- you have just tamed you attack peaks...emulating a compressor would bne using some kind of veloicty controlled adsr over the top but you still wouldn't achive the sound you get from squashing sounds together

what if you use that method in combination with recording fades in the mixer?... i mean set the bpm to 30 and record a quick rise and fade out or something..

EDIT: i know that's basicly what the attack does but say you have a snare with a long tail, if you record a rise from the beginning of the snare making the tail louder would'nt that sound a bit similar to it being squashed by a limiter?
