well what are you trying to do? there's thousands of software but it depends on what you want to do.

programs to make beats with?
or programs to record?
programs for effects?
sequencing software?

etc...

Also check out Recycle.

Great for chopping, and can even organize the chops into an AKAI .pgm file for you.

if thats what you want, Adobe Audition/Cool Edit Pro 2 is a good place to start.

It can:

-sample
-chop
-add effects
-record
-multi-track
-mixdown
-pre-master
-master
-burn to CD

It has everything YOU are looking for.

Find a free mutlitracking program compatible w/ Midi.

Of course along with the rest of the advice given and you'll be fine.

Trial and error. There are demo versions. Try out which one your most comfortable with.
