At $2k why the 2500 not a 4000?

Yeah, I misread your question. The MPC 4000 does this as well. It was the first MPC with this function.

I wonder, does the 2500 let you preview sounds from disk instantly like the 4000, without having to press an extra button like on the 2000xl. This would be a deal maker/breaker for me.

What do you mean by that..instantly? And pressing an extra button like on the XL?

On the 2500, you have to go to the load menu. There, you will select which drive you want to load samples from. When you mover the cursor to a sample, a play button will appear in the LCD. You hit that button and it will play back the sample. If that is the sample you want, you hit the DO It button to load.

I'm not going to bore you with a, "which gear is better debate". But I will tell you this machine is no joke. It's a break thru in modern technology, I've used the mpc 2000xl and own the 4000. If you just want to work with a hands on sequencer, this is your best bet! Compared to the 4000-it's lighter, loads samples faster and easier to work with. I have nine external sound modules, so I have no need for mutli-sampled instruments. It's the 2000xl with more features-CD/DVD drive, flash rom, 10 standard outputs and more midi options. Akai is well known for there sampling sequencers. Although no gear is perfect, you will not be disappointed with the 2500.

you have to think about this with the price...
The 2.5k comes stock with the 8 extra outs while you have to pay extra for that on the 4k
I think that if the took out the eight out expansion on the 2.5k it would start at around $1650 or something

But you have places like Alto Music in New York selling the MPC 2500 for $1600...not need to think about what the price it would be minus the 8 outs.

People are forgetting the high prices they paid for mpc's that do HALF as much. When I got my mpc2000, the xl wasn't even out yet. The MPC2000 base model witn no 8 outs or effects and a measly 2mb of ram was going for 1399 us dollars plus tax! The 2000 studio with smpte and 8 outs was something like 1899... a hundred dollars less than the price of the 2500 and it brings filters and effects and 8 outs. The mpc2000 studio plus was the model with 8 outs, smpte and the effects card, was going for like 2200 or 2300.... so you factor in how you're getting filters, effects, 8 outs, AND more memory and flash card quick loadikng on a 2500 makes it worth the 2G's in comparison to what you paid for a mpc2000 or xl with all the bells and whistles... if you bought a 2000 classic or 2000xl studio plus model and upgraded the memory and bought a scsi zip drive you basically paid as much for a 2000 or xl as what a 4000 costs! I paid 1350 for the mpc2000 brand new, around 80 dollars for 32mb memory, 229 for 8 outs, and about 240 dollars for a scsi zip drive 250 mb, shoot, I basically bought a mpc2500 with half the features for about the same price when you factor in all I spent on accesories/necesities!

Exactly what I have been saying. Back in 1997 when the MPC 2000 dropped, every kid in the world didn't have their sites on being producers as they are today. When I got my first MPC 2000, it cost about $2300....no 8 outs...no effects card, no SMPTE,...and only 2 MB of memory. It only came with some cheesy Akai samples on 3 floppies and an OS disk.

I started getting into production when the mpc 3000 came out. That was when I was trying to get money for a triton classic. Everyone in the store was telling me to get a mpc xl, but I went with the triton instead. Later I seen a demo of what the mpc can do, so I got the 4000-went they first came out. They where nice, but like jahrome said earlier, "They are over kill". I A/B the 4000 and the 2500.. In my result, I fet more comfortable with the 2500. I would load, edit and make tracks faster on the 2500. I had features I never used on the 4000. There is a difference in sound-same groove. But a record label or artist, wouldn't point out which mpc you used. Its your talent that makes these machines sound good.

Anyway, I sold my 4000 and kept the 2500! Get a mpc, it doesn't matter which one. Compare, budget and start making beatzzz... You'll love'em all !!

I own a mpc4000, I started on the mpc2000xl. The biggest differance in use for me was the use of multisampled instruments, the rest of the features where nice extras. When it boils down to it, when i make a beat.............all i need are the features of the mpc2000xl, especially if you have a sound module. I chose the 4k because the 2000xl was getting on my nerves as far as zip drive, loading times, and Filters.

if i where buying now, id get the 2500 and a soundmodule.
