What is the effect called

that a lot of artists use to emulate phone conversations?

Telephonhe EQ. I use it a lot for vocal ad libs or add a little distortion for a real gritty vocal. If you don't have a plug in that has a "telephone" preset try filtering out everything below 250hz and everything above 3,500-4 khz. Try different Q settings(preferably higher for a sharper cutoff) and boosting different frequencies in between 250-4k range until you get what you like. Essentialy you want a flat frequencie response between the previously mentioned frequencies with a fairly sharp cutoff at both ends. You might be able to find presets on the internet for whatever software you're using.

Sometimes its an actual phone call. Peep this Radio Shack link...peace

that;s a nice piece of shit..but my store in amsterdam selss a better thingy... it's a small box (like a lighter) you hook up you telephone cable on one end..and the other cable on the other..

on the top there is a audio cable going to stereo jack..it's just pics up everthing routed trough the box..very nice very handy

I know sound forge, cool edit (adobe audition) both have that preset as a native effect (no plugin required). Many software EQ's will have that effect as a preset also.
