yes this is generally true however, listen to hi tek's $hit, he says he hates compressing his sounds and you can hear it.....

just another view....

the compressor is key to certain hiphop sounds but not others- the old skool boombap always benefits from a bit of compression as does those slammin dre tracks that peak over 0db....but you should always deceide whther you need it first before applying it...

i fell into a trap when i started and compressed a lot of my sounds (wrongly i might add) and it was only when i got my head round it that i soon found that the situation usually dictates it.

i am not talking about compressing the 2 bus. i am talking about drums and bass. it is quite easy to hear compression and i hear it and see it used by my peers a lot. the compressor is the key to getting that kick so that it feels like it is hitting u in the chest. what hip-hop artist doesn't want that. that song on games album produced by hi-tek has a ish load of compression use in it all over that track. so what he says and what he is practicing are 2 different things. and i think that song is mixed exremely well. also u have to have a good compressor these days the distressor gets a lot of work in the hip hop industry. i mean a lot. all compressors are not equal. for me too much compression is never enough. when i get back to my studio i think i will do a mix of some drums and post before and afters so that y'all understand me a little better. the only problem with that is that most people are going to listen with computer speakers and really miss the whole exercise.

I know some artists don;t want compression. A guy I Know did a session with easy Mo bee and he was like, no compression on my shyt. but dude compressed it a little bit cuz he felt it needed it.

So some artists might not know whats going on.

In response to the first response...

Layering a sound doesn't exactly double the volume output. That really depends on the phase of the sample. 2 in phase samples will double the decibal output. But 2 out of phase samples will actually cancel each other out.

You can thicken a drum sound, but layering the same sample, but EQing each sample accentuating a different frequency range.

It also depends on the source of the sound.

[quote="D_Samp"]layering will just give a boost to the perceived volume (eg 3dB of gain everytime its "doubled")

the best advice for "thick" drums or "big" drums or whatever adjective you want to use, ie this.... choose THICK or BIG samples

if you start with a good source sound you END with a good sound.

EQ doesnt come into it. like i said in another thread, part of my job is fixing up other peoples audio mistakes, and 9 times out of 10 its the terrible way people use EQ.

leave the EQ alone, and actually LEARN the theory behind comrpession. your beats will love you for it. theres no shortcut to good compression (outside of boing presets). compression will single-handedly phatten up your drums moreso then anything else if used correctly.

but theres a million other things you know.... we all have our nuances in drum mastering.... but as far as general things go, a good compressor and good skills with it will put you in front of the thousands of others with **** drums every day.

I don't know how many hip hop tracks you've mixed, but what you've said is not even close to being true-you NEED eq to make original sounding drums-period. Layering drum sounds directly on top of each other will double the sound -yes, but the trick is to move each sound just a bit to the left or right-like a few ticks. And eq DEFINITELY has alot to do with shaping each sound and making drums 'thump'. Eq, combined with the right type of compression, and gating will give you those thick, original sounding, tight drums you want provided you start with a decent sample and know which frequencies to adjust when equing.
