cheers, yeah I have my kick pedal striking a trigger [can't see it in the vid] you can't watch the MPEG? hmmm I made the first video in Adobe Premiere and the 2nd one in Windows Movie Maker so maybe somethin **** up?...I will be posting up more vids soon of both SPD11 pad work & acoustic kit stuff...as for link to my beats thats different stuff sorta stuff and currently I'm workin on a release so when its done I'll throw up some links...thnx for lookin pce

I knew I should've included drumming in my studies. I play bass and a little guitar... and even less keys. Programming drums with pads is tough. Especially breaks and fills. Drumming is my weak link.

Maybe you can help me. Do you know of a drumming book that would have lots of grooves? I'm looking for funk, rock, reggae and jazz. Maybe even some song books for drums or something.

I've tried looking through some of the instructional books, but the grooves tend to be very rudimentary.

thnx chaps...yeah as for books, man its been a long time since I hit those but, look around I think David Garibaldi has done some or maybe a video not sure...Rick latham has a funk type instructional book [groove studies or something it called] whichhas been well regarded for many years... basically reading notation for a drumset is really easy eh, so theoretically you could buy some these books mentioned and easily be able to transpose for step writing



As for gear, if your using a real drum kit u can get Ddrum triggers or similar brands for about $20ea i think [don't quote me] BUT you will need to have a brain or MIDI input box to covert all these MIDI signals to then trigger your MPC...the easiest way would be to pick up an old SDP11 like I got [eGay for coupla hundred bux] OR alternatively make ya own..all you need is a shit drum [old 13” tom or snare, pull off the heads, buy a set of mesh heads [$15] and grab some ddrum triggers…depending on how midi inputs you have will determine how many drums you can make up…mesh heads kill the gum rubber pads anyday as they facilitate natural rebound ..so drummers keen to get a MIDI rig could go both ways [SPD11 type rubber pads or make ya own] these days the technology has caught up with outta date systems like the evershit V Drums [wack from teh beginning] to a point not where you can get "Legend" brand mesh head system 5 or 6 pads, a kick trigger pad a Brain, all teh mounting hardware etc for like $500...so depends on ya budget and what ya wanna do really.. for the record my kick trigger is a Yamaha one dunno what model but it’s the current one [$90]…the authentic Roland ones [tiny little rubber spike with inverted beater are a fukkn rip off so steer clear of those!

Ohh I have no hi hat expression pedal but I wish I did but i must say having expression for hats is really important to put that chomp in just the right spot with the right amount of feel is hard to program..BUT if ya wanna do it, set up a open hat and closed on ya MPC pads or drum pads, slelect a Voicegroup for both these to share..simply, one will stop playin when the other is hit..SO you can “cut” the tail off the open hat before it expires giving it a natural feel….hope this helps…check the new Vid I put up…next one will be of the real kit [atm I’m using Windows Movie Maker & the video quality isn’t the best but it keeps the file size down,sorry]

that spd11 looks neat. you can set 2 different midi channels on each pad so you can mix up the intern sounds with other extern sounds very easy. spd11 has 4 trigger inputs for kd or hh control or others.. for pads so chocking is possible

Do the pads have good velocity sensitivity for making rolls & fast hihats? Does it send out midi "note off" message via midi? or is it a "note on" action only?

eh drumtrack, yeah it has 4 ext tigg inputs and expression inputs, midi control is channel, note,sens,curves,prog. change & heaps more...basically you can set it anyway ya want with midi ..I also am using it with a small SP505 for live gigs/jams [much mor eportable than my old akai S900]...don't look at teh newer models if all ya wanna do is trigger...yeah you can layer 2 pads [via MIDI] per pad & also send out a stereo mix of onboard sounds [which are pretty gay mind you BUT it has a pretty good array of 808 sounds]
the newer SPDS has a built in sampler but is pretty exy and not necessary if you have a MPC

I have some sort of cheapass midi drumkit. I can't sequence in Ableton Live because the note-off message comes immediately after the note-on . At least i think that's the reason , i'm no midi expert.
However i can play with Native Instruments Battery and it will respond perfectly, but can't sequence.

Haven't been able to try with my mpc yet because it needs repair. I think you can ignore note-off messages on the mpc and... then it will sequence ok?
