Trying to Lower Latency

I'm trying to find a interface that has real low latency... Currently, I am using a M-Audio Audiophile USB soundcard, but I was thinking about getting the Mbox..... I really need something so that when I midi sync, the connection will be low.... Right now i have cubase SX, and I can't lower latency anymore.. It's at 11ms I think, and it still has a little bit of latency and it takes a quick second for the midi connection.... any suggestions?

Mike - What's up man i'm from OP too yo! To fix issue you might want to look into the digi001 (on e-bay) or yamaha makes a nice soundcard that has low latency. I'm not sure if that helps though.

How about adding more memory? The Digi 001 is a good interface as long as you have a decent computer. Some people hate running Pro Tools because it doesn't run well on their setup.

Problem is i'm running everything off of a Compaq Armada Laptop (Don't ask why I went laptop....) so whatever I get, it would have to be USB.... Noble, what street you off of? Maybe we can hook up on some trax or somethin..... you can hear some of mine if you go to 'Your Music' it's under "A freaky Beats Production" or somethin like that

11ms is pretty low, I can't see why you would be hearing any delayed response with 11ms latency. As for the MBox, I would imagine it would make your latency problem worse cuz you would still need a seperate midi interface and you would be taxing your system twice as much using two seperate devices as opposed to one. Make sure your buffer settings in Cubase are at optimal settings for acheiving low latency as well.

There are other options for a laptop, If your laptop has pcmcia slots(it should) you can add a firewire interface to your setup and your audio/midi interface options really open up.

you will always have that slight delay at the begining of your sequence with midi. it is just what happens. are you using the song mode or sequences on the mpc? to get it to lock using song mode, add a sequence at the begining of your song with a blank 1 beat bar. this will allow midi time to sync up. if you are using sequences, say a 4 bar sequence, start to record at bar 4, beat 4 in cubase so your sequence actually starts at bar 5 instead of 1. this should help with the start.

try messing with midi offset in cubase. i am not sure exactly where that would be or what it is called in cubase as i have never used that program, but it should be something like midi offset or input offset or something like that. you should be able to adjust it way more than 11 ms.

you can also do it the old fashion way and hand slide the sequences up to the correct spot.

mesh is right. the latency boogyman isnt going to go away with an MBox.

you can try a firewire based card if you want.... but i wouldnt sweat it.

the thing with latency is there is REPORTED latency and EFFECTIVE latency. you just have to ignore the numbers and go with your ears. too many kids are quoting websites and have no real experience

well having worked in countless setups, i happy with my old DELTA44 cards and a very trusty old 2x2 midi interface. this is my own rig, while at work the motu 828 mkii is great.

when i have to use a digi001 that sucks, but it really doesnt matter anymore, latency shouldnt be an issue.

doing the same as mesh, you always have that first few bars blank and READ YOUR **** MANUAL on how to "midi offset"

also called "latency offset"

you tweak that right and youre set. no more whinging on worldwide messageboards only cause you havent read the manual and dont know how to do shit right

Here is a Tip...

Disable all necessary system services....tweek the living daylights out of your system... Make sure your sound card and USB resources IRQs are not sharing IRQ's with other devices.. Put your Laptop in STANDARD PC mode if you have too.... (recommended for low latency) Then get on with it...

I have a M-AUDIO Delta and its 2ms latency. (Thats PCI though)

You should be able to get near 5ms with your USB version. No hassels....that would be good enough for any peep.... considering we all remember the days when low latency is not possible.... If it really shits you...Play your hardware synth with another sound when your recording midi.... then assign it to your VSTI after that so its all nice...
