Secondly, most hip hop producers use the MPC but don;t get deep with it, or any gear they own really. That's why it's all about presets, and low pass filtering, eqing and that's it. You can use a machine to make great music but still not understand midi, there's no crime in that, but it is what it is. If you think Shadow wired his own studio you are puttin him on a higher pedestal than is realistic.
the MPC is a very powerful machine, and when you understand it there are ways in which to use the design most effectively. Like chaining midi thru's instead of using the multiple midi outs, that's a indication that a person doesn't understand the machine. There are many others, but lets just say that the majority of people using MPC's are prety much DJ's and just need basic functions and just know and use the basics, which is all well and good, but when you see how those cats run their rigs they claim preference but it is clearly ignorance.
Understanding midi is just the price of admission.
PT is less technically critical, and he probably works with an engineer that can explain whatever he needs.
That said, I love his work and hope he keeps making great albums.
