Thanks for the info.I would still have to go with the s2000.Like i said i did some research on it and think it would be a solid add to me setup. As far as the deterioration,i don't think it would be that big of a factor if you pitch up/down on the 2k.

Now if can only get Akai or a computer programmer to update MESA to work on OSX and XP, we'd be set. Not that I ever used MESA when I was running OS9 but now after using software samplers I know how nice it is to see the actual filter envelope ADSR and even something as simple as being able to type in a sample name rather than using that jog wheel.

I've been preaching for years for people to score a cheapo S2000 (or similar) to use for a robust sampler to use with an MPC (yep, you can check the archives).

A $100 sampler will stomp any $1000 PC in the ground when it comes to performance, portability and remaining virus free. Not to mention that even the oldest sampler is still worth something. I can put an S2000 out on the curb and it will not last an hour. The 486PC from the same time will still be sitting there two weeks from now since you have to pay someone to take it off your hands.

I've been trying to get Numark to release the MESA source code to me to update and ensure its continued operation on the newest and latest computer operating systems. I have no little luck so far. Maybe if a few others could chime in it may help,

I'll try to help out. I work for AMS/Victor's House of Music and perhaps I can get in touch with the right person. If I can get you the code, you can take care of keeping it updated? Sounds great. I'll let you know soon.

maybe it was just me, but when i had my s2000 i didnt care much for it... probably cause i didnt have a sequencer to use it with? but the s3000xl looks kinda interesting...

:D

The S2000 was my first good samper.
It's a bit of a pain to use, you have to scroll through tons of screens/menus until you get to the one you want......but it's still cool. The filter sounds way better than the MPC2KXL's (though it's just a basic LPF.)
The S3000XL is great too. It's more user friendly. Sounds a tad cleaner.

I'll be calling my Akai Rep tomorrow for possible sources for the MESA code. Stay Tuned...

I went to software base sampling and felt the results were too clean and lacking character. Bought an 2000xl and broke out the s2000 again and now I'm very content with my sound. I'll give up hardware when they make software samplers with MPC or S series sample algorithims. Seems far fetched and a step backwards for programmers though. ONe day I bet....

i havn't noticed it either mate, before i got my xl i read an article about sampling in Soundonsound and they had a big lowdown on digital, guess you'd have to be an expert to notice it but it was something that stuck in my mind to look for when choosing a sampler

Right on. Not trying to call you out on a lie or anything. Just never heard that before. It's good info to be aware of. Thanks.

I can tell the difference when listening to my s1000 v. mpc 2000 (especially if you pitch down 60%). the s1000 just sounds "better" though i couldnt say why. the explaination about interpolation algorithms is as good as any...

"If I can get you the code, you can take care of keeping it updated?"

I sure can. The problem with trying to get through US channels is that there is no one here that was involved in its development. In fact, I think there is even only one US employee from Akai Pro now at Numark. In other words, there is no one at Numark that has a clue about the software.

Numark shutdown the UK operation, where all of the MESA software was developed.

My answer has been to work on creating new MESA-like software, under Linux.

So you have started writing the code? I've talked to a few US Akai employees just recently but who knows if they know anything about MESA. Again, I'll try to help out as much as I can because I would really like to have a S2000 software patch editor.

Ok, just as suspected, no luck from the Akai heads. The whole buy out thing **** shit up. Pretty much what 3000 said but wanted to try anyway. Is there anything you need help with the LInux software? I can beta test for you. Let me know.

It is horribly rude and illegal in most countries to repost private email to public locations without the senders explicit permission.

Didn't think about it I guess. Just wanted to let you know the latest in my quest for the MESA code.

can somebody tell me why I would need an s2000 or any other external sampler when I already have a 2KXL?

I thought the sampler in the 2KXL was plenty good
