Mute Groups

I never really looked into it - I dont think the 1k has mute groups

But - when I record I want to switch up the tracks to give the same beat a diff flow ( take hihats in and out - and what not)

I was looking for suggestions on what other people might be doing to achieve this

I have ideas - like haveing mutliple copies of the same sequence with the selected tracks muted - and just alternating between sequences.

The MPC 1k does have mute groups. And you seem to be on the right track. I'll make a sequence, copy it, delete maybe the hats and record a new pattern or make a fill.

yeha, thats why i end up with 15+ sequences on a track. its fun though. and interesting. just make multiple copies, and number them. eg. hook part 3, or verse2 pt. 4

There seems to be a confusion between mute groups and track mute here..

Mute groups (which the 1k indeed has) are a way to mute one pad with the sound of another, tipically a closed hat muting the open one. This is simply done by assigning the same mute number to a couple of pads (you can even use a blank pad, for muting without an actual muting sound), but Im sure you know that

but youre talking about muting tracks, like you do in the track mute screen, using a pad for each track. This can be real fun, provided you keep each sound on a separate track, but you wont be able to record this mutes as you play, should you wish to play it again in exactly the same way. This is one of the major features of ableton live, as you may know, but I dont think its possible on the mpc 1k, or any other sampler that I know of...
I also copy the sequence and do variations, either deleting or adding new tracks

But you got me thinking, if the mute groups are only active when the pad is playing (I mean, not when the pad is on a muted track) maybe there could be some interesting fx using the mute groups, not really what you want, but fun anyway: I guess we could have a track with the muting pad, and only when this track was un-mute would it actually mute another sound (with the same mute group), making some sort of gate effect or something... not sure if this actually works, or even if you made any sense of this last paragraph

i use mute pads when i playback loops & phrases. i got frustrated with not being able to record track mutes.. so i started recording loops and converting them into patched phrases (hihats for example) & assigning it to a mute group. then i'd assign a pad with no sample with that same mute group and use this to stop the playback of the loop in a way thats recordable. works like a charm..

Just tried it, I like that s***
