Did you ever loop a CD and hear a click in it? Also the super hot exclusive obscure stuff that is really ill to find and sample is usually only on vinyl. Nothing wrong with sampling off cd, it doesn't sound warm and there's sometimes a click in it if you loop it... Did you ever hear the Necro song I NEED DRUGS? There's a click in that loop... most people just don't like the way it sounds when you sample off a cd but if you can make it work then it's not a bad thing to have in your arsenal.

it dont matta what you sample off of. some stuf fis only on vinyl. i am in taiwan and just went into a record shop and got some ill chinese records that i could never get on cd. thats the only reason people go diggin. but you could easily go to TARGET and go the 99cent cd bin or CASSETTE bin and sample stuff from that. its all up to you. some will sound lofi and some hifi but thats the beauty of it. ALSO that click you get can get fixed with the zero crossings edit so dont sweat that. just get the levels right.....sample tv vcr cell phones whatever, just make sure that the signals are strong. i hate hummmmm

It pops and clicks because it is not looped correctly, it's not the sample, it's the person looping it..

ya i think that is true.... when i was using the akai REMIX 16 before i got an mpc60 a few months ago, when i would hit the cheasy ass plastic pads(during recording a new sample/loop) on it i would hear a click/pop in my sample unless i took the time to make sure i hit the button very smoothly and also let go of the button inna subtle fashion... im enjoying these mpc pads 1000% more than those! i dont have to resample something that was already sampled and timed perfectly just because i didnt use enough finesse on the button while sampling.... so im pretty sure it has to do with the person doing the sampling and the equipment used instead of the sample source....

sample anything and everything... well except for other samplists.

put some passion into your sampling though... get active in finding new sound sources.

a lot of the "warm" stuff about vinyl is bullshit. you wouldnt have a clue where i sampled half my stuff, or what format its off.

if you cant be a crate digger, you can sample tv, radio, dvd, video, take a mic down the street, around your house, mp3s, whatever.

the more effort you put in and the more pride the better.

ps, mp3s are a pretty lame way to sample however. shitty sound sources make shitty music as a general rule.

That's how I feel about it. You could FART on the mic, sample it, 16 level it, and get some crazy a$$ bass sound. Then everybody would be asking what keyboard you got it from. So it really don't matter where you get your sounds from, even if they're from yo a$$.

Ok, hold up. No one should rule out Mp3s as a viable sample source. Yeah sure, if I had a mp3 of a cool drum break and the original vinyl LP of it in front of me, I'd probably sample the LP. But if you have a fast internet connection, you can find damn near -any- song you can think of, if you know where to look. Think about that. Get some editing software, and you can make it sound however you want it to. It fukking fun to open up your mp3 folder and find a new sample to use. Especially drums and short sounds. And you can do it all sitting down...Just an idea. Not that crate digging isn't super fun too, though, cause it is.

Oh but of course.. ps, mp3s are a pretty lame way to sample don't agree there..Good sounds can come from anywhere homie..That's like saying KFC chicken is wack and plucking your own chickens is the only way to do it, the end result is that if it tastes good then it just plain tastes good ya feel me....however. **** sound sources make **** music as a general rule. This is very true.

I don't think people are saying sampling from MP3 is wack because of how easy they are to get.......I think people say they're wack because they don't sound very good.

Most MP3s that you get off the web are not high quality. The compression/format used to make the file small enough to send around on the web makes for sound quality loss. They sound brittle and digital. Someone else in here can better explain in technical terms why that is, but just take the Pepsi challenge. Take a MP3 from the web, and take the vinyl and a CD of the same song.
Compare by ear and see what sounds best.

I'm sure if you used some MP3 samples mixed in your track, it can still sound good....but if EVERY sample you used was sourced from MP3, it might sound sketchy.

Yeah, true, there are some really low quality, bad sounding mp3s out there. But with more and more people with broadband connects out there, it's not uncommon to come across 192 and 256kbps copies of stuff...alot of which are obviously hi-quality recordings of the original vinyl. Plus, factor in plugins like Vintage Warmer and outboard gear...I guess my post is more directed to people just starting out--don't feel like you have to sample only vinyl. Also, in your future, its really hard for me to find LPs and even cassette tapes, whereas the "internet"....

KiloBytesPerSecond, KBPS is lowered to make it a smaller size yeah, maybe your right, it's just peoples perception of MP3 sounds they hear on the web right?.. I've heard bad ones and I've heard good ones. so yeah, I understand what you are saying, maybe peoples don't know how to differentiate between high kbps and low kbps, they are thinking all MP3's sound the same. They don't. On the other hand, maybe peeps do think it's cheating to use other media and not going through the work and fun of crate diggin.. That's the reason I feel that the Playstation refference was being used.. PS got GOOD sounds in many games.. Don't sleep, you'll be limiting yourself from some good stuff you can tweak into an excellent form..
