The manual only maks refrence to the SCSi port on the back for using an external Hardrive for storage. I have noticed I can get much larger storing capacity with USB and Firewire. Can I use the USB jack on the front of my 4000 (the one for a keyboard) for a USB Hard Drive. Will it still read it from there?

This is not necessarily true. The largest hard drives on the market are typically SCSI since the high end server market drives this. USB and Firewire drives are ATA. A quick check found a 640 Gig SCSI and a 500 Gig ATA.
Whether you can afford the SCSI drives is another question: $3100 SCSI vs $400 SATA
Not sure if the MPC4000 could handle non-SCSI drives that size.

You cannot use the USB port on te front of the MPC for storage devices...you can however go to the AKAI website and download AKAI.sys and use the USB port on the back to connect to your PC and use that as a backup / storage device. It also allows you to then use a software based sample editor which you may find much easier to use than the editing functions in your MPC....
