Side Chaining?

What is side chaining and how do you do it on a regular compressor?

My understanding is its a way of making the bass line dip in volume when the bass kick comes in. Am I right and how do you do it?

I've searched and nothing comes up expanding on this.

Side chaining is routing a signal to activate a piece of gear on an other chanel or bus. I sidechain gates to snares and kicks and use white noise or a sine wave to juice things up. You can then effect them together or seperate. I use software compressors so I can't tell you how to do it on hardware, but I am sure it is very similar. There are several uses for side chaining, I use the one I mentioned above the most. What you are talking about is ducking. Also you can duck the bass when vocals start or any other track (or group) for that matter. If you are into house, you will hear some producers duck leads or bass with or against the kick drum for different effects. You can get several different results by playing with the compressor's parameters when your side chain is set up.

I am pretty sure Cubase does not support Side Chaining. The VST standard definitely does not. Sure, some pluggins have fudged side chaining but it tends to be a very convoluted process..
