Hello, I want one of these things but I need to know if it can sample in a specific way. Will it start recording a sample on the MIDI sequencer Start message, and then stop recording at the MIDI stop message?

If so, it will make it really easy to phrase sample other stuff a block at a time, then rearrange the blocks...is it possible to do this with ease on the MPC1000? It would be perfect if no trimming was required...I wanna sample a measure and move on to the next one like butter.

I guess a similar/more general question would be: how does the MPC1000 handle being in a setup where it isn't the MIDI master? (the MIDI master in my case would be the highly stable clock from my Monomachine).

Unfortunatly it doesn't have this option. You can set a volume threshold to begin recording then count and punch it out. I get perfect loops almost every time. But it would be a lot cooler if it could be triggered by MIDI.

Yuo can set the volume threshold and hit play on the sequencer though if you're sampling from other external gear.

my 1k seems to work fine either as master or slave to my machinedrum.

only thing about slave mode is that if you stop playback by hitting stop on 1k, 1k will not start again until it receives another 'start' from machinedrum. so you cant do the 'stop then start at different phase' performance trick i like.

I use my 1k for this all the time. Like it was mentioned earlier, you can set the volume threshold really low, and i like to turn loop to off, so it stops playing when the phrase I want to capture is done, and i just hit stop as soon as it stops sounding. Then I can loop it. If you stop it at the right time you can get away with no trimming. I would recommend looping by triggering the sample on the first beat, this will avoid it going out of time over time. This is one of the coolest things about the 1k over the 2k I think. I hated not being able to play the sequencer or even trigger stuff from the 2k while it was recording.

thanks for the replies...

the problem with volume-threshold triggering of the sample recording is that sometimes the phrase I wanna sample doesn't really come in on a beat (a pad sound with slow attack, for example). So volume trigging doesn't really help much since I'd have to then sequence that sample with a weird start offset relative to the beat grid.

actually, I don't really care if it doesn't have MIDI start trigging...like you guys said, hitting record manually on the downbeat will probably work just as well. it will keep a little bit of that turntablist vibe alive :o

Why not just start the record a second BEFORE the downbeat and then cut/trim it to how you want it. Isn't that what the trim is for?

Is there a millisecond pretrigger on the 1k like there is on the 2kxl?

one thing i do is hit both the start recording the sample button and start sequence at the exact same time and it will come out perfect if u enter the sample at the start of the sequence from step edit.

yeah, that will sort of work, but it isn't ideal for two reasons...one, I would like to avoid trimming if possible, because I would like to be able to sample many phrases from my other gear as smoothly as possible. and two, the phrase won't always have a clearly defined downbeat point, like the slow-attack pad I mentioned earlier, so trimming would be a little tricky and then I'd have to spend time fine-tuning the sample trig location in the MPC sequencer (since it wouldn't have started exactly on the downbeat).

yeah, that sounds like exactly what I'll need to do...thanks.

Yes there is a pretrigger. I was reluctant to use the level-trigger until I discovered that.
