well !

today I was visiting our biggest musicshop in town.

and they had a new 2500 in the showroom - and also a 1000.

so I played around with the 2500 - nice sturdy machine.

the knobs - layout - everything - they did a good job on this one.

I had to admit (also I like my 1000) - in the direct comparison of the both machines - the 2500 wins.

the sliders - the rotary knobs - the tiltable screen - really makes it look&feel more pro. If I had the extra money, I would definitely buy it.

BUT BESIDES of all that - what I just didn't understand!!!

Why did they change the performance of the mpc 1000 PADS compared to the other mpc's!!!

I mean the size is one thing - portability, etc. (I'm sure the 2500 pads have the same look and feel as the 2000&4000 pads)

BUT WHY THE HELL DID THEY CUT CORNERS ON THE PAD QUALITY.

One of theeee cornerstones of the mpc's.

The difference couldn't be denied.

I didn't have the time, nor the possibilities to make a comparison of the velocity responsiveness - BUT just a few hits revealed that there was a totally different feel to it.

The 2500 had a distinctive feedback - when you push them - the move about 1mm - something like a "click" without a sound.

The 1000 ones don't.

WHY DID THEY CHANGE THAT - It wouldn't have made the machine 20% more expensive.

I guess cause they were trying to keep the price low. I look at the mpc1000 as an entry level type mpc (Please dont shoot me guys!)

i've tried both, so i agree they're different as you describe. i assume the mpc1ks are cheaper to make, and part of the price difference.

the 1k pads work just fine for me, and theyre what im used to now.

a real drum head doesnt have a 'click-point', anyway, you just hit it and it gives a little, same as the 1k pads.

edit:: in fact, i try to remember to tell potential buyers to try both types of pads before they decide.

I wouldn't call it entry level. It functions similar to all other MPCs. It's just more affordable and compact. Replacing the pads costs more than all the other MPCs, which is strange.. but I don't see why they couldn't make the depth longer to fit the standard MPC pads. I doubt that would've costed more than what went into the design and manufacture of these pads.

it doesn't matter to me except in live use

pads are pads when you have step edit to solve any velocity issue you may have.

as for 1k being entry level, i think that's a misconception because it's cheaper. it's no easier to learn than other mpcs.

Nah man, it can bang big beats with the rest of them, just smaller, more compact and affordable that's all.

2500 pads are better by far! i just got a chance to play with it today. along side the 1000. the 2500 pads are softer and are bigger. but its just pads. they both respond well (enough for you to make beats :))

Which is the MPD16 most like? 2500 or 1000? they look more square like the 2000/3000/60/2500 rather than the oblong shape of the 1k.
anyone have both the mpd and the 1k?

anyone use the mpd to control the 1k? (just asking! i know it would kill the portability  )

I wouldn't say it's entry level, but I do believe they were trying to keep cost down though. The lower the manufactoring cost the lower they can set the retail price.

So shall I dare say the pads were cheaply made? Shall I dare say the machine was cheaply made? They wanted to keep the price down right :?: Shall I say the mpc1000 will never last as long as the 2kxl? Just a couple thoughts

Come on guys! They made a unit that would not only be cost effective , but open up a bigger market for the MPC Series to be used by everybody (poor, middle class, rich) from all different backgrounds. So you
have to be reasonable about the structure of the 1k,verse,2500. To me MPC's is moving right with the future use of how music is being created via
PC. Case end point........ If you guys have the new Scratch mag. page 69. and the back were there advertising only Three MPC's ,4000,2500,1000
and the mpd16 which doesn't count. But my point is older models are fading
and we just have to accept change. Premier still uses MPC 60 ,sp1200,s950
alesis hr-16. ? what form of comunication do all these machines have in common with hardware, other music software, etc ? M-I-D-I 8)

I meant structuraly. after a year of use, the pads are already dying in most peeps unit. what about the real guts on the inside? How long before they go.
