what do u guys think about already used samples?

Ever been out diggin for records and u come across some shit thats already been used by a well known artist or artists? Happens to me all the time and I usually dont buy it and try to flip the sample my own way. What do u guys think about using samples that somone else has used already

well i used to avoid using samples that i've heard others using, but that doesnt mean i'm not gonna use it. i sampled 'you are my starship' not long ago. when i was loading the sample into my mpc, i was second guessing whether or not i should use it. anyhow, i spent the time to chop it up nice and tweak the sample to get it exactly how it wanted it and it worked out good. i wasnt trying to hide that i was using the sample but i knew i had to do something more with it. the beat turned out good, one i've been meaning to come back to and do some more work on. anyhow, i'm glad i used the sample cos its one of my better beats (even if still unfinished). but also i think i used the sample differently enough to stand up to any crit about jacking samples that others had already used. but in knowing i should do something different with the sample, i worked that extra bit harder which resulted in a beat which improved my choppin/filtering/tweakin.

i dont think its wrong to use samples that others have used if you've got your own ideas. reusing the same ideas over and over that others have already done, that i have a problem with. if you got a fresh ideas, use em.

I think if you are reusing a loop.............the emcee really has to spit some hot shit over it to make it an original song. plus you cant expect to get 100% credit for diggin it up. However, if you flip it and flip it original-in your own personal way, thats the shit

ive heard samples reused by popular artists all the time; they even reuse the same beats too-not just the samples.

Its not a bad thing, you just have to come original as possible.

Well.... If I'm sampling something that has been previously used I usally try to either come harder, sample a different part of the song, or just make it sound totally different from the original.

you got to really flip something that's already been used. Nicolay did it with an Al green sample. I kept hearing it and stayed away from it. After I heard nic's version, I felt like an idiot for not doing the same thing. If you can't come correct with the flippin', just leave it alone for someone else to do. I used to feel like a real schythead when I would sample someting, and hear the same exact thing in a different song. Do it right duke!

it doesn't bother me if an artist uses a sample before you do, just as long as it hasn't been used by a shitload of other producers. I do however take issue with "producers" who use obvious samples that any self-respecting DJ wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. for example, the artist Omega One uses a sample from the original Rollerball movie, made famous by the popular "Executive Party" synth track by Andre Previn. when I first heard it I was a little irritated because 1)it's too obvious & 2)most DJ's/record collectors know where this sample came from which is why you haven't heard anyone using it. it just struck me as lazy bedroom producing without any regard to the craft of sampling and digging for obscure sounds.

I had this discussion with a few producers. I know one producer who purposly finds those already used records to sample it and freak it a different way.

I totally dissagree with that, I want people to hear something they have NEVER heard before. Samples that no one has ever had the kindness to find and freak... to me thats what crate digging is all about.

I don't think anything is wrong with using a sample somebody else has used already. As long as you can bring something new to the record, and it doesn't sound too much like what's already been done.

i think its cool if you have the idea for sampling something, then do it, THEN discover its been used. but if you hear it an think hey i wanna sample that then its about silly

I personally hate hearing when someone uses a sample that is on a legit album and they don't change it up. Or if it just has the same vibe in general. I'm just beginning so it doesn't deture me because if i learn something all the better. I think it's dumb when people purposely find what sample a song used and then go get the record solely because they like the beat.
