I don't think long cables are a factor in lag... they might cause errors if long enough, but not latency. (Electricity travels pretty fast in a wire.)

Daisy chaining leads to 2 possible problems as far as i can see::
1. simply more midi data stuffed onto one cable= increased lag
2. soft thru can lead to lag, or a poorly implemented hard thru... im sure machines vary a lot in how well the thru works. A good thru wouldn't have to cause much or any lag.

You're right about that....poor or cables over 15 meters, can cause data transmission errors....but they, in turn, can cause "lag" or other problems as the data drops out... It's helpful to send MTC on a seperate midi cable. Some gear that syncs to MTC require it to "discard" the data not related to MTC before syncing. This can also cause problems...I should have mentioned that I am using a MIDI patch bay as well so my chains are no longer that two devices long. I also keep gear that handles large amounts of midi data at the beginning of any chain...
