In theory any drive should work as long as it is scsi. Unfortunately no. Trail and error my friend or take the easy way out and order one of ebay for $110. But if you look harder you can find a scsi drive that works with the mpc a lot cheaper. I use a teac drive ripped out an old pentium computer loaded into a scsi drive case I found cheap.
what you need to do is go to akai's website and look up the list that has all of the compatible media for the mpc2000xl. i went through the same thing...what you can do is just find the model of a compatible scsi cd rom drive (i used one made by TEAC) and then go to a computer store and see if they carry it...usually you will have to have them special order it for you. you can also choose to get a scsi cd rom/recorder drive, which is more expensive, but you can record straight to a cd/rw. the regular scsi cd rom costs around $100.00 to $150.00...and the scsi cd rom/recorder usually costs around $250.00 to $300.00. hope this helps. peace.
