2 Questions

1) When your seperating your sounds, do you use filters or EQ?

2) Do you do this while you are making the beat or at the final mixdown?

i add some effects during the beat making but i don't go crazy with them until i track them into nuendo.

I filter, EQ , whatever when I mixng.

i usually filter my samples as i go, i usually wont mess with eq untill i finished the putting the beat together, have it tracked out and am mixing it down. but i'll jus do whatever seems to work best at the time. i'm new to eq, so once i've had more practice with it perhaps i'll start eqing as i go rather than leaving it till last.

I track without any (or very little EQ) because it's easy to add EQ but not so easy to undo it...besides if you EQ a sound to be great as a stand alone, you'll probably need to EQ it again to seat it in your mix. EQ is primarily a finishing tool. Filters on the other hand, have a more dramatic effect and I usually build these into the sound. More often than not though, I don't use either. The older I get, the less use I seem to have for FX and the more I seem to appreciate the "natural" sound. If the source material is as it should be, you'll need less....

Oh ok. No I don't do that. I will maybe eq tracks slightly while I'm mixing.
and maybe afterward slighty eq the whole master buss.

eq'ing or filtering can bring sounds out in samples that you may have never noticed, that background stuff then u can chop or make ur beat around these new found frequencies

I think earlier people were telling you about how to mix ur beat and make it sound good

but u want to know about creating new sounds by eq'ing and filtering, am I right?

u still need to eq ur beat in the mixdown process but thats a whole nother technique

So when I add sounds to a beat, I should filter them if they sound cluttered and leave EQ for the final mix?

OR

Should I leave all the sounds untouched (even if they sound cluttered) until the final mixdown?
