OK...I was just digging around in my box of tricks and found some samples I did a few years back of blown bottles that are very cool. I'd share but it was too fun making them so I'll just share the idea instead.
Take some bottles of your favorite liquids. (It's important to have bottles of different sizes) Each bottle represents an octace. Take a slug from the smallest bottle. Blow across the top and sample the sound using a good mic. It's probably a good idea to simply record the whole session to tape because you're going to be doing alot of drinking....anyway go ahead - take another slug....sample away. My high notes are an old Codine syrup bottle, next is a small coke bottle (needed a chaser) then a beer bottle (Corona). after that I used a V.S.O.P, Dom Derignon, and a jug of red red wine respectivly....
Remember to take both half full and empty samples as the pitch changes with every drink. Try being creative and actually tune your samples while drinking if you'd like. This is after all a creative process. Don't forget to assign each bottle to a keyspan and carefully tune them. At the end of the day, you'll have some very cool samples that play like an organ and have a story. I find mine to be very organic in feel and make a wonderful lead sound....For some extra fun, try pulling some air through a glass tube filled with water if any of you have such a thing lying around - then sample the bubbling sound and cross fade it with some of your blown bottles for a cool effect...And rember - you did it all for the advancement of the arts

i don't think it's good for your liver to drink codeine and then alcohol...

but this sounds like a fun idea.

Heaven forbid you think I am actually promoting drug and alcohol abuse....use however, is a different story....

Another really good sample to make is with a 5 gallon water jug like you get on water coolers...Bang two of those suckers together and then assign an octaves worth of notes to the sample. They have a definite "note" as opposed to pure percussion. Sort of like a big hollow kalimba but different...Well worth the time it takes to sample and again a sample no one in your circle will have but you....

I've actually done all this before and it is VERY fun.

another one is to, get a cardboard salt box, macaroni box, tape a mic to it so that it doesn't slide around, and record your own homemade shakers.

The sounds comes out SOO GOOODD..

I remember someone else said to record the finger thumping on a record while the needle is placed ON the record and not moving. I've done that at a friends house as well.

another thing I've done is place a cellphone next to my mic and have the little old school midi tones play out, go into sound forge chop them up, do a bit of time stretch, a bit of reverb, drop the tune on them and instant basslines and riff notes.

I got plenty of DOWN sample recipes.. That's just a taste though..

If you have a portable recording device....take a 4lb sledge to one of the really fat wire supports on a power pole....it's like the worlds largest guitar string.....
