What Do You DO?

For all you Vinyl users out there..... I just got a Stanton STR8-30... so i can start sampling, I just had a question... how do you all minimize the crackles and hisses? Just need some suggestions, thanks ~Mike~

Im gonna get chacked by the true skool hip hop ****** out there but if all that hiss and what not bother you. Cop a Stanton CD player, sample offa CDs, some CDs (usually the rare ones, cmon, CDs have been around long enough, there ARE rare CD runs, especially on reggae, jazz and weird rock), some even have that old school warmth minus the crackles cause they were cheap transfers.

If you want to get crackles and hiss of the vinyl samples, filter and isolate with EQ, probably something like SoundForge would do, and there is plenty of special plug ins that do it, but your prolly better off doing it manulally with EQ, cut the extreme highs cause thats usually where the crackles and hiss are at.

If you wann do it on the MPC the best thing you could do is is play with the Res filters.

Start by cleaning your records. Get some of that dust out of the vinyl grooves. But pending on how old the record is or should I say how long it's been opened and how well they've been maintained. As for the somewhat minor hissing and crackling you could use a restoration/mastering software program to clean it up even better.

Sound Forge "noise reduction pluginpack" has a click and crackle removal tool which I use sometimes and it makes my samples spotless..

Sometimes I want that static though so I don't use it then...

As far as Doveski and the CD player thing, I'm old skool wit it but I also understand changing of the times and CD sampling (any source) is cool. Get your samples any way you can and get busy. Good advice Dove..

just leave it in there...

I'm not really a pro in sampling (as I have no turntable and no MPC yet), but from what I heard, sampling from a vynil is 10 times better than from a CD because of the poor dynamics and "warmth" you have on a CD. But I did not experience it myself so I'm not 100% sure.
I'd like to ask, for all y'all who got turntables, do your vynils start to crackle when you play them like, more than 10 times, when they are purchased in perfect condition ?
In other words, does playing new vynils on your turntable alter them after a few plays ?

if you play records over and over they do wear...it's just the nature of friction...it shouldn't be causing a noticible difference after only 10 plays though...


...I got this one Monica record that I first learned to scratch/mix on, and there are spots on it that are worn from back spinning, and cueing, but if you're wearing records that fast, you need to adjust your arm balance, get a new stylus/cartridge, or something, 'cause a record shouldn't be noticibly different sounding after such a short time...


...I don't know it all, but I've been DJ'ing for close to 7-8 years...

biggest difference Ive come across is drums, drums on vinyl is nice...well, I might be biased but Im gonna say almost anything sounds better off vinyl and nothins better then leaving the record store with 15 records for clo$e to nothing...

Make sure you invest in a good needle to start with, that will decrease the ware on your records. But you shouldn't notice any wearing after 10 plays at all. Really the only wearing I've had is with records I've used for scratching many many times.

See Cool Edit has some nice filters, but the only thing is, for some reason, when I audio into my PC, the volume is lower than what it was sampled into

Have any of you seen those records where there are just drums, and you can sample the drums..... I need to know what they are called so i can order one

Get any break beat record, record a couple of breaks into the PC, noise gate the wav up high like maybe threshold-40, 200ms, attack 1 and see how that works for you. That is one of the ways I chop drums right outta breaks. After that I run all those drums through time stretch at like 105%-120% to lengthen them up a little, a smidgeon of reverb and BAM, I got drums..
