Question about converting a digital signal

Question..

If I use the M-Audio CO2 SPDIF Optical/ Koax-Converter (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/CO2-main.html) , can I than use the ADAT Optical out from the MPC4000 as a stereo input on the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (version 1) in the SPDIF digital input?
I need a low-budget recording system with at least 4 inputs, preferably Pro Tools compatible. The Audiophile is only 77€, the converter box costs 47€... Both are cheap and have decent quality.

adat is not stereo. it's 8 channels.

can the converter convert 8 channel optical adat to 2 channel coax spdif?

nope it does optical to coax & vica versa..
but i connected my sony minidisk (which has optical in) to the 8 channel adat toslink out on the digi001 and i had a nice stereo signal...

i am not trying to be an a$$hole, but isn't the mpc 4000 almost $3k and u want to use some of the cheapest conversion known to man? if u use spdif u will bypass the a/d but will be dealing with a jittery clock.

mini disk is 2 channel optical, (I have 2 portable minidisk players and 1 component that sits in the entertainment center). Digi001 optical is switchable from/to 8ch adat/2ch spdif.
