anyone using Roland XV5050 as their primary synth? question

im looking into a rack to pretty much use as my main hardware joint for a minute...

ive been looking into the 5050 because you can get them so cheap and they have so many sounds plus the 2 srx boards

but i was wondering if using this as my lone instrument with the mpc, does the 64 voice polyphony hold up well for you?

the 5080 would also be nice but my money may not permit it at the moment

this will be for rap music of course

i dont think it would be a problem, but since the XVs can now use stereo waveforms in its 4 tone setup, id imagine thatd eat up more voices much faster than the xp30 i used to have back in the days

My man said it was dope. I asked dudes on the forums about it two weeks ago and they said it was a dope module especially for the price. I say grab it up

It would be nice to have 128 note polyghony but for rap that will probably be enough 95% of the time unless you are layering alot

i just ask because for a minute it would be my sole single sound source for entire tracks. if anything tho i can start with that, cop 2 srx for it, then later on add a fantom xr and fill that joint with 6 srx and have a monster library of sounds and waverom to work from

Did you ever cop that XV5050? I ask because I just got a XV5080 and I'm having a total blast with it! I'm interested to hear 100% XV tracks.

^^^how do you like the arpegiator? Can you edit user arp paterns with it?

is the User interface a pain in the ass?

are you using presets or programming your own sounds?

i got a 5050 & a fantom rack , in my opinion I would put in a lil bit more cash and get a fantom rack, you'll be more happy, look in ebay , theres always one for sale at a decent price tag I just have the 5050 cuz this dude sold it to me for 300$ a while back but i still rok it
also remember that the 5050 is a limited on what you can do with it ( no multi mode , effects, etc)

juniorcartel, i was considering gettin one of these. I was considering the xr or the actual keyboard. Do you think the user interface on the xr is good?

im looking to layer synths and program my own arpegiator patterns. I know you can do it on the xr, but i was wondering if you had any regrets not getting the keyboard version?

in my opinion if you got an mpc , getting synth workstations is just a waste of cash, thas why i get only modules. the xr interface is pretty complete & and simple once you learn the manual ( like all things) you can do all that stuff you want plus more. No regrets on not getting the workstation, although that fantom x is real pleasant to work in with the screen and its a sick OS but my workflow is more prolific with modules and an mpc

yeah, its tough to decide cause you can only mess with them so much at the store; so its nice to get other peoples input. Tommorrow im heading in to try em out and make my final choice.

I highly recommend the fantom rack

There is no arp in the XV-5080. It doesn't make a difference to me because I always sequence my arp tracks from scratch anyway -- even on the Virus which has a ton of 'em.

The user interface is brilliant for a rack module. You can do *everything* from the front of the unit. If you don't like staring at an LCD screen, you can use the XV Editor on your PC/Mac.

It comes with 896 presets that I've been messin' with. The best feature is the ability to play patches straight off a Smartmedia card. You can register 8 SVD files at once. An SVD file consists of 128 user patches, 64 performances, and 4 rhythm sets. I have SVD files for all of the previous Roland modules that are backwards compatible with the XV-5080 (including the original Fantom factory presets). Most of the presets are drowned in reverb to sound good as single patches. I'll probably come up with my own patches that mix well in my songs.
