how do u sample hihats

i've tried sampling hihats from vinyl but they always come out sounding either to low, distorted, or just plain shitty. For some reason it's even harder to find a start point for the hihats w/o them always sounding a little off. A little help would be appreciated greatly

turn the levels up when u record. Start recording a second before the hat acutually drops than just chop off the excess. U coulda figured that out faster than it took u to start this thread. Good luck man.

I've tried that but there's always to hiss from the vinyl and the louder you turn the gain up the more distorted it sounds

well Turn up the volume on the mixer not on the MPC. And u shouldnt hear that hissing sound

overdrive the shit out of your mixer when you sample hats through it. The kicks and snares will be distorted but the hats will come out nice and clean.

It sounds dumb, but try it.

TICTOC, great advice. tricky to do but well worth it when trying to avoid hiss

also, what you can do is layer. find a similar sounding hat and layer it under all the hi hats you sampled from wax. this way, you can turn down the polluted sample and use it as a "skin" overtop the clean sample - you'll get the sound as if you sampled it from vinyl while at the same time masking the noise by turning it down considerably.

layerying has saved a good number of nearly dead samples of mine.

chop the hats tight and use attack/decay to trim off excess hiss. set the decay mode setting so the sound fades off right after attack, then find the length you like.

if you have a mixer like mine, you'll hear the hiss either way

just choose a good sample. i have problems with hats sometimes, but sometimes i get a good sample.

just trim off the beginning noise/silence and the tail end of it.

Try a high pass filter on them to cut out the extra frequencies.
