quantize grids, resolution, swings, etc... are f***ing up the originality.
You can be original while using all of this stuff. Originality is in your head...not in the machine.
DOUBLE THE TEMPO (example: 80bpm doubled is 160)
If you record on 1/16, the way you hit the pads is how its gonna record. if its off a little bit, it'll record that way.

If you change to 1/8 (with the tempo doubled) it will record on "grid". everything will be in place according to time.

double the resolution. change to 1/16 for an "off" feel.
change to 1/8 for more on point sound.

Just out of curiosity, when you record your drums "live" (without quantize), do you record them on seperate tacks or on the same track?

By J-Villa Mon Dec 19, 2005 10:21 pm
i use the 1k to play the drums 'live' too... i dunno bout yall, but i play the bass and snare on the same track first... then i cut and paste the snare into it's own track...

Get the swing within the 4 bars (or 2) and copy them. First hihat then snare.
Thats the basic.
And dont drum the whole track live, sounds bad. Loop it few times if you got the drums perfect.

How would you go about layering drums on top of drums while recording live?

using step edit in 1/32 on double time (like smoove said) can give the illusion of unquantized when it really is, trust.

by the way, yall are way to hard on people, i see what dude was saying about how the drums on comp/chopped/recorded making a diff.

What's funny is that it sounds like cats need to hear that it's ALLOWED to turn quantize off. It's like, if Dilla and Madlib do it, then it must be OK. Like no-one ever thought to turn quantize off themselves. Jeeeeeezsss.

Isn't that the first thing you do? You want the kick to hit a fraction before the snare, you KNOW quantize doesn't cut it, so you turn quantize off and hit the beat how you want to hear it. Are people scared to turn quantize off?

"Just out of curiosity, when you record your drums "live" (without quantize), do you record them on seperate tacks or on the same track?"

Sit in front of your MPC. Load up a kick and a snare... How do you FEEEEEEEEL like playing the beat? 90% of the time you want to play the kick and snare together, with both hands. So that's how you play them (you can always seperate them later, like J-Villa says).

"How would you go about layering drums on top of drums while recording live?"

Record drums. Go to next track. Record more drums. For layered claps and snares, it's often better if the timing is not EXACTLY the same on each hit. If you do want multiple hits layered together in perfect sync (like you sometimes need to have with layered kicks) you could
a) play it live, then sync up in step edit
b) use the "pad also triggers" function.

"using step edit in 1/32 on double time (like smoove said) can give the illusion of unquantized when it really is, trust."

Why would you want to give the illusion of unquantized when it's much easier to just play the beats unquantized? It's not that scary to turn quantize off every now and then. Really.

lo-fi, i understand what you mean about turning the quantize off. But if you dont need to, then why?

I cant speak for everybody, but of course I've programmed drums without timing on. Sometimes it works for the situation, sometimes it dosnt! Sometimes it just dosnt work out right. If it works for the track then by all means turn it off! But if you do have to use timing, there is a way to get it to sound that way with it on.

Turning it off is cool like i said, but dosnt always work for the track. it has worked for me in the past. I've dont this on many occasions, but im saying if you double the tempo and bang them drums out, it can come out tight.

hahahaha someone got carried away. cause it does. i done a whole inst album with no quantizing 20 mins long. im a brown man , im not scared of doing free drums. shit dont preach to me. lol.

but if yall wanna be on jay dees dick im letting you know 1/32 in double time will give you that exact sound and its more challenging going thayt route than doing a 1 bar unquantized beat and copying that. thats all dont blow this shit out of proportion.

i knew i shouldnt have said nothing on this fag thread. damn i got sucked in!

If youre not gonna take advantage of mpc's sequencer, why use it at all. do it right and quantized drums will sound just as good as played live. even when you turn quantize off, mpc is still recording into a grid.

By planimal Tue Dec 20, 2005 5:44 pm
i've always wanted to record my drums live, but every time I try to get a gig, they won't hire me cause they say recording drums live is not a good show? All you guy's get gigs to record live drums with quantize off? Please get me a job!!!! I want a live feel too on my mpc!!!!!

peezie: (not sure about other mpc's but) on my 4000 when i turn quantize off, record drums, and then go into edit (the grid) there's not a damn thing in there. When i turn it back on the hits show up in the grid so that i can edit them if need be. Then when i go back to recording i turn quan. off again.

Mess with quantize settings if y'all want to, but to me it sounds more mechanical. IMO its easier to have it off, and swing it manually. Less steps and i don't feel limited. You want your drums to sound like real drums (don't you?), maybe some don't.............

jonathan, not sure if the 4000 is in anyway similar to the 2000, but if timing is off and you go into EDIT, instead of usign the Bar buttons, you can hold shift and press one of the button next to it to only view the "Events". so instead of going bar for bar you can jump directly to the notes. you probably have to do it that way since the notes arent exactly hitting on each bar. with timing off, it wont be directly at each bar or on the "grid" like with timing on.

did i make 1 bit of sense? :?
