floppy ?

my mpc2000 classic went under about 8" of water for a week during the floods of katrina. when i finally got a chane to retreive it it the case it was in was still damp and mildewed. i opened it up and let it dry out for about a week. i then prayed and plugged it up. it powered up and everything appeared to be ok. now the only problem i'm noticing is when i try to format a floppy it stops at 95% and a error message appears. and also if i save a seq it appears to save propper. when i try to load it "??????" appears by the drive seletion. if anyone knows please help. thanks

To answer your question i would have to say you might just need to switch out floppy drives.It's cheap and very easy to do.

....Also...Since it was in the water so long, now is the time for you to become a Preventive Maintenance GURU...Water has all kinds of SH!T in it.
Get you some electrical Contact Cleaner from Grainger or Radio Shack.
If you don't, Eventually OXIDATION will set in on you PC Boards inside your MPC and it will start acting weird. You need to take it apart, Submerse the Boards in Isopropyl Alcohol for about 15 minutes, Then spray Electrical Contact cleaner on the Boards. LET THEM DRY FOR A DAY OR SO. (The Best way is to find a place that will ULTRASONICALLY CLEAN the boards like they do Jewelry.This process will make it like it was Just manufactured cause it will remove stuff from since it was 1st made!!)<----Find someone on the Net if you can.

You can take the Floppy apart, Get some Text Wipes from Radioshack, and Clean the HEAD on the FloPPY. Whats happening is the FloPPY is not Accessing the Sectors on the Disk it needs to to properly Save your work.
ALso Lubricate the Worm Drive that Actuates the READ/WRITE Heads (upper and lower). OR...Just replace the whole thing if you got the loot.

Under your rubber pads is a "Contact Board" which is basically a series of Mylar Switches....Not sure if you can seperate it, but if you can, seperate it, clean it with Contact Cleaner and put it back together. You can order another one if you have the loot or can't seperate it. Oxidation is garanteed later especially here cause Metal meets Metal, makes contact and is what gives your MPC the signal to generate sound.

ALL THIS IS TO KEEP OXIDATION FROM SETTING IN, CREATING CURRENT TRACKS LATER AND SHORTING SOMETHING OUT. WATER, ESPECIALLY THAT NASTY WATER IT WAS SITTING IN HAS MORE STUFF IN IT THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.EVEN THE ELECTOLYTIC CAPACITORS SOAK UP WATER LIKE A SPONGE AND WILL EVENTUALLY BLOW THE HELL UP ESPECIALLY AFTER SOAKING IN SALT OR BRIMEY WATER.
I WORKED ON SUBMARINES STRAIGHT OUTTA COLLEGE SO I KNOW ABOUT WATER, SALT AIR AND ALL THAT DUDE.....GET AT ME IF YOU NEED SOME HELP.

Well see with a Mobil its touch and go. A mobil has a Battery attatched to it and if its ON, Forget it man....Everything gets short Circuited. If its not On you may get lucky, cause it usually just shorts out at the battery contacts.

But...If you have any electrical device that gets wet WITHOUT any power on it, its always best to have the PCB boards Ultrasonically cleaned. They use to use Trichloroethylene which is a colorless liquid which is used as a solvent for cleaning metal parts...The EPA outlawed its use. If you breath it
you'll be seeing the last thing that was on your mind in X-Ray Vision along with whatevers on the ceiling....Good Sh!T!! Cleans the Hell outta electrical parts.Water gets in places you can't see or get to by just letting it dry out.
Water has Minerals and Calcium deposits and all kinds of other Micro biological sh!t. When water dries it leaves all the that sh!t behind to keep on growing and eventually you will have a current track to short something out.
What the Gov't doesn't want you to know is that if you took every piece of electronic equipment you have and did this, it would last you 2-3 times longer. Consumer electronics SUCK!.. Professional and Commercial Grade stuff in ANYTHING is Better than consumer grade sh!t.
anyway...I have seen Electronic Modules on a Submarine that were 45 years old and still working because they cleaned them every year word is bond....Thas my 2. Hope this was helpful to you Kats..

yeah..in that case it would have been

1 Get the wife and kids out
2. Grab the MPC, the Triton, and the ASR10
3. PC
4. Laptop, tent, blankets and pillows.
5. Clothes, soap, underware, socks, deodorant, camping grill and lamps..
6. leave the walmart keyboard in the closet where its at.

something similar happened to me my mpc was stuck for 3 days in a flooded basement.
i took it a part and tried to clean but i really didnt know what i was doing.
you better do what beat monkeys talking about
i still have the mpc shes a soldier but 2 years later it keeps getting worse the floppy was the first thing to go then some of the buttons and now it freezes up when i sample but yeah meng good luck with that and getting back up from katrina

Hey hey, I tried searching the inernet to find a place where they could professionaly clean my MPC but I have no luck. Should I keep looking or call it quits? Do You guys know anything like that? Thanks, tom

i did some more searching. is it possible to get it professinaly ultrasonicly cleaned? i cant find anyone that does this, all i keep getting it people who sell the machines, but i dont have that kind of money...

contact AKAI with your delima .. they may replace your MPC
or repair it free of charge because of the way it was destroyed..
the flood and all .. may be worth a try ..

Get a SCSI drive state that the floppy malfunctions----make it a "package deal" and put it on EBAY!

I read your post history in a an attempt to attain more information about your problem since you injected this issue into some else's post.

I assume you recently bought this. If so, and it is defective, I suggest getting a full refund. If you can't, then I suggest that you post a detailed description in a new thread. I've been repairing MPC's for many,many years and have never needed to "clean" an MPC to the extent you suggest, so I would like to see how you have arrived at the conclusion that you need your MPC ultrasonically cleaned.
